Puzzle Drifted Into Sylvanite Ore That Surpasses Anything Found
Sylvanite ore that surpasses anything that has been found in the locality has been found in the Puzzle claim of the German-American company on Gold hill. It was cut into at a depth of 250 feet from the surface in the drift from the Ophelia tunnel.
graphic for visual presentation of text The high-grade streak from which the rich ore was obtained is only a few inches in width, while the vein is mineralized for a foot and one-half across its width.

graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text D.H. Moffat intends to start the old tunnel, sometimes known as the Ophelia and at others as the Smith-Moffat, that enters Gold hill a short distance south of the city{Cripple Creek] limits.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Englishmen got sick of their bargain after putting up only a small amount of money, and the title to the ground has reverted to the original owner, or owners.
graphic for visual presentation of text Some people say that Mr. Moffat is the sole man in the enterprise, but others insist that Eben Smith is also interested in the bore.
graphic for visual presentation of text Be that as it may, that it is to start up again must be true, for the tunnel management that at one time had a lease on the Blanche, one of the properties of the Blue Bell company, have asked for a renewal of their option to work the claim, and while the lease has not been made out at this writing it will be within a day or two.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text The tunnel has now entered the mountain a distance of some 2,400 feet and in Blanche ground it is known that a vein was cut, but before prospecting it work on the tunnel was suspended.
graphic for visual presentation of text That its prospective value must have been regarded favorably is evidenced by the fact that the lease that was held is to be renewed.

Info Title:
Ophelia Tunnel Illumination Method
While Candles can't be recommended as a means of lighting a tunnel or adit during construction, this is the type of Illumination chosen for the Ophelia Tunnel.
graphic for visual presentation of text Practically everything that can be said in the favor of candles, or open-flame oil lamps, is that they require a much smaller initial outlay than electricity or acetylene, yet they are more expensive per unit of light than either acetylene or electricity, consume a greater amount of oxygen, and give off a correspondingly greater amount of noxious gases. Candles not only do not give enough light, but what they do supply is flickering and unsteady unless there are no drafts, and since they are quickly extinguished by the exhaust blasts from air drills they cannot be placed to light properly the work of the drillers; hence the efficiency of a high-priced drillman is greatly reduced. Candles are often wasted or dropped into the muck-pile, and item of loss which may amount to a considerable sum in the long run.

Ophelia/Moffat Tunnel Under Sheriff to Connect with Blue Flag
The Moffat tunnel heading is now in the Sheriff claim on Raven hill, one of the War Eagle group, at a distance of 1,5 miles from the portal, which is on the western slope of Gold hill about a mile south of Cripple Creek.
graphic for visual presentation of text Development was commenced August 1 from the Blue Flag Gold Mining Co.'s main shaft, to connect with the Ophelia or Moffat tunnel, at a depth of 1150 ft., thence to a point directly under the Scott shaft of the War Eagle Consolidated Mines Co., and connection made therewith by raise. This work will be done under a contract between the Blue Flag company and the War Eagle Consolidated company, which now controls the Moffat tunnel.
graphic for visual presentation of text With ventilation perfected through the two shaft connections, the Moffat tunnel will become a public utility and will be used for transportation and operating purposes by mining companies, mine owners, or their lessees, on properties along the line of the tunnel.

Blue Flag Tunnel to Moffat Tunnel Connection
John W. Sheafer, Judge of the District Court, this week denied the application of L. T. Gray, claiming interest in the Moffat tunnel property, for a writ of injunction to prevent connection with the tunnel from the Blue Flag mine workings.
graphic for visual presentation of text The War Eagle Consolidated Mines Co., the Blue Flag Gold Mining Co., the Moffat Tunnel & Transportation Co., and Hildreth Frost, attorney of this city {Cripple Creek], were named as defendants.
graphic for visual presentation of text It was alleged in the complaint that damage would result "through the filling of the tunnel with bad air" if connection were permitted.

graphic for visual presentation of text Mr. C. C. Chapin, of the Chicago Brokerage company, and representative of the Boston gold mining syndicate of Cripple Creek, was in town yesterday looking mining property. Mr. Chapin, in speaking of Eastern capital, said:
graphic for visual presentation of text "I am very well acquainted with moneyed men of the East who are going to invest in Cripple Creek mines. When I left Boston a few days ago, Cripple Creek was all the talk there. Myself and Mr. Parfet, our mineral expert, are here in behalf of Boston people, and are thinking of taking hold of the Moffat-Bush tunnel.

graphic for visual presentation of text ''The syndicate which I represent is ready and willing to invest in Cripple Creek mines, but we must be given a run for our money.
graphic for visual presentation of text A boom is near at hand for this camp, and all through the East I heard moneyed men talking about the output of gold of the Cripple Creek district for 1898."

graphic for visual presentation of text Mr. Chapin refused to make any definite statement about the Ophelia, or Smith-Moffat tunnel, but from other sources it is learned that the people he represents are shortly to take work in hand.
graphic for visual presentation of text That the merits of the tunnel have been gone into fully is corroborated by the people who live in that vicinity, as they say a small army of experts in the last sixty days have been traveling over the ground and sampling the rock on the big dump.

graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text The Ophelia tunnel, under the management of Mr. Parfet, is making headway rapidly. On an average it is being driven 15 feet each day. So far no attempt has been made to drift on any of the many veins that have been cut, but it is likely that prospecting in that line will shortly start.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text There is one thing very remarkable about the Ophelia tunnel just now. It will be remembered that a few months ago a regular river was flowing from it, and now to-day there is not a drop of water in sight.
graphic for visual presentation of text A few days ago the engineer discovered that his boilers were about dry and that the tanks were empty, and it actually became necessary to pull the fires until water could be had.
graphic for visual presentation of text The supply now comes from the little reservoir below the road that was built to make ice.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text Within a very short time the Ophelia tunnel will be lighted by electricity and not only that but the cars are to be run by the same power - a regular trolley line.
graphic for visual presentation of text The speed of the cars will be about ten miles per hour, but this can be increased if necessary, as the rails used in the tunnel are monsters, the same weight in fact as that used by the Rio Grande railroad [might mean F&CC].

graphic for visual presentation of text If the expectations of the Gold Exploration and Tunnel Company are realized, that property will very shortly be shipping at least 500 tons of ore a day from the big bore that is slowly but surely going through toward Bull hill.
graphic for visual presentation of text Mr. C.C. Chapin, of the Chapin Brokerage company of Boston, accompanied by parties from the East, arrived in the city{Cripple Creek] yesterday and will remain here several days inspecting the property.

Alamo to Be Worked Through the Ophelia Tunnel
(From the Cripple Creek Press.)
graphic for visual presentation of text—————————
graphic for visual presentation of textALAMO.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text The management of the Alamo company has decided to do all work through the Ophelia tunnel instead of through the shaft which has been used until recently.
graphic for visual presentation of text The depth obtained in the tunnel workings is about 450 feet, the expense of working here being only about $6 per foot, while the cost of sinking in the shaft is about $20 per foot.
graphic for visual presentation of text The drift which is being run has about 200 feet further to go before getting directly under the shaft and connection will be made at that point with the shaft by means of an upraise.
graphic for visual presentation of text The drift along the vein has so far accomplished a distance of about 1,000 foot, the company having been at work for the past three or four months.
graphic for visual presentation of text Besides drifting a considerable amount of crosscutting has been done to explore the territory and more will be done as soon as the drift has been run the other 200 feet. The vein shown about 3½ feet in width and assays have been obtained running as high as $300 to the ton.
graphic for visual presentation of text All work will be done through the tunnel until the workings are connected with the air shaft.

Callie Lease Said to Be in Bonanza
Denver Post.
graphic for visual presentation of text Now the lease on the Callie, located on the south slope of Gold hill, just east from the Mary McKinney, is said to be in bonanza where the vein was cut by the Ophelia tunnel.
graphic for visual presentation of text W.S. Stratton owns the ground and the lease will undoubtedly be transferred to him for a large consideration, as negotiations are now pending and makes it reasonably certain that no outsider will be able to buy the lease.
graphic for visual presentation of text The price to be paid will be very large for a mere lease, but there being from 6 to 10 feet of smelting ore in the ground where cut by the tunnel, the lease is worth considerable money.

Info Title:
Short Description of the Moffatt Tunnel
Below the town on the bank of the creek we found a gigantic tunnel scheme in progress, called the Moffatt tunnel, which is being driven in to crosscut the main portion of the mining area to find what the ore bodies will do at considerable depth. This, whilst a sort of prospecting tunnel, expects to encounter many as yet unknown leads and veins, and to undercut others already known on the surface, such as the Anaconda.
graphic for visual presentation of text It will also be utilized as a drainage and exportation tunnel. We understood that it was to go clear through the district by way of Anaconda, on to the Victor mine and Bull hill. Such a tunnel, if completed, will be a great boon both to science and Cripple Creek, by showing us a little more what Cripple Creek is made of, and clearing up many doubtful points relating to the continuity with depth of its ore deposits.

Info Title:
Ophelia tunnel as a Drainage Tunnel
The Ophelia tunnel, cutting the granite at the west base of Gold hill, has an elevation of 9268 ft., and when 2600 ft. in length is reported to have had a flow amounting to 2100 gal. per min. According to Lindgren and Ransome's latest report on the geology of the Cripple Creek district, this tunnel water came entirely from breccia in fissure zones connected with the main volcanic neck.
graphic for visual presentation of text This tunnel became dry in 1898 with the drainage of the Standard tunnel which had been under construction for about two years previous.
