graphic for visual presentation of text The disaster caused considerable shrinkage in the stock of the El Paso on the Colorado Springs exchange. The situation at the El Paso is being used as an argument to hasten the agreement on a plan for financing the drainage tunnel for the lower level.

Roosevelt Drainage Tunnel Draining El Paso
THE CRIPPLE CREEK DRAINAGE TUNNEL.
graphic for visual presentation of text———
graphic for visual presentation of text Water has at last been released from the workings of the El Paso mine workings above the connection with the Roosevelt drainage tunnel at Cripple Creek, and it is now flowing at the rate of about 2,000 gallons a minute. The water has already receded in the mine below the 800-foot level.
graphic for visual presentation of text The directors of the tunnel company last week authorized Contractor Carlton to continue under his contract for 200 feet from the present breast of the tunnel. If he secures a flow of 2,000 gallons a minute before he has bored 200 feet, his contract will be completed, but if the necessary flow is not secured in that distance, cross-cutting will be started to tap some of the lateral water courses.
graphic for visual presentation of text The total length of the tunnel was 15,524 feet at the time this action was taken, and the cost has been $27,000, leaving $23,000 unexpended from the original fund subscribed.
graphic for visual presentation of text This balance will be used to bore the 200 additional feet authorized and for lateral cross-cutting and miscellaneous expenses.
graphic for visual presentation of text Because there is no trench in the bottom of the first 1,400 feet of the tunnel, operations from the portal have ceased and are now conducted through the intermediate shaft.
graphic for visual presentation of text The heading of the tunnel is now at a place directly under the end of the upper or original drainage tunnel, which will soon be dry.

Churn Drilling Abandoned at El Paso Main Shaft
Unexpected obstacles have interfered with the plant to make a churn drill connection between the El Paso shaft at Cripple Creek and the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. The drillers had sunk only a short distance when they encountered a steel bulkhead, and when they ran into some steel plugs later they gave up the undertaking.
graphic for visual presentation of text The management has let a contract for an upraise from the tunnel to the shaft. This will require a longer time for completion, but will have the same effect in draining the workings of the El Paso. Although the drainage tunnel has been driven into El Paso ground, it has still about 800 ft. ahead in the granite before it reaches the eruptives and the first water course, which will probably be about the first of November.

El Paso Happenings

El Paso.—For the past three months there has been shipped from this Beacon hill mine upwards of 135 cars of ore valued at about $260,000 and the gross production for the last half of the year has exceeded $500,000.

With the working force, which numbers 170 men, it is questionable if this record is exceeded by any in the district.

  • The ore shipped is largely mined at present in 500, 600 and 700-foot northeast levels which are being extended into the recently acquired Beacon Hill-Ajax property.
  • In the 700-foot level the water, amounting to about 120 gallons per minute, is dropped to the 800-foot level, thence pumped to the drainage tunnel at the 600-foot level.
  • The present flow from the El Paso drainage tunnel amounts to about 4,700 gallons per minute as compared with 5,700 gallons three or four months ago.
  • The Lonaconing mine, owned by the El Paso company, is now under lease to Wyatt and Burnside, who are making regular shipments, amounting to about ten cars monthly.

W. M. Bainbridge is the manager in charge of the El Paso company's mine operations.

Info Title:
El Paso Mine Stuff in 1908
About the beginning of 1908 the El Paso Gold Mining Co. decided to lease its upper workings, which showed little or no profit under company management, pending the completion of the new drainage adit. Their good judgment has been proved by the majority of the lessees doing well and paying the company fair royalties.
graphic for visual presentation of text This one mine should become one of the most active producers when the drainage adit is completed, as undoubtedly large bodies of good-grade ore exist in the lower workings.

Info Title:
Deep Drainage Tunnel Effects
Denver, Dec. 5—Computation by a competent engineer shows that it would cost 6½ times more to drain the Cripple Creek district to the present depth of the deep-drainage tunnel by pumping than by the tunnel.
graphic for visual presentation of text This will convey an idea of the benefits to be derived from this great work, which has just been completed through the dry, hard granite "rim," or surrounding country rock, into the more porous and spongy volcanic breccia area, which contains the gold-bearing veins, and also the vast amount of water which it is desired to liberate, and which is expected to unwater the mines an average of 730 ft. below their present lowest workings.
graphic for visual presentation of text One big mine, the El Paso, has already been unwatered, and it is stated today that in all mines on Beacon hill, the Mary McKinney and Elkton especially, the water has lowered 5 ft. or more, though the mines at the extreme east of the camp have not yet shown any lowering.
graphic for visual presentation of text The drainage will, of course, be slow, as may be gathered from the fact that in September, 1904, according to careful records kept by the engineer of the Cripple Creek drainage tunnel (the next one above the Roosevelt, or deep drainage), the amount of water drained to lower one vertical foot in the principal shafts in the district was 58,109,000 gal., and that the removal of 4115 gal. per min. only lowered the water level in the central and western groups of mines at the rate of 4 ft. per month.

Deep Drainage Tunnel Drained Lower El Paso Mine
Denver, Nov. 27—The lower levels of the El Paso mine, at Cripple Creek, are now un-watered by the connection with the deep drainage tunnel, and the rich ore said to exist there will, after some necessary timbering, be available.
graphic for visual presentation of text No special waterway or ditch has been cut in the main tunnel, and as 2000 gal. per min. has been flowing through it, mainly from the El Paso mine, work is being carried on from the intermediate shaft instead of from the portal.
graphic for visual presentation of text Apparently at this writing the "main water course," as it is called, has not been reached by the tunnel, but it is expected daily. A great deal has been written by the nontechnical press about "tapping the underground lake."
graphic for visual presentation of text That the 3½ miles square, which is a network of dikes, veins and cross fissures, has a common water level seems natural enough, and, in fact, has been proved by the higher drainage tunnels to be the case, but the "underground lake" theory, with perchance eyeless fishes swimming about in it, is hardly tenable.

El Paso—Rich ore continues to be struck by leasers in the upper levels of this mine, and it is stated that everything is ready to split the casing in the borehole at the bottom of the main shaft, which releases the waters into the deep-drainage tunnel, and unwaters the lower levels of the mine, where the richest ore is said to be.

Deep Drainage Tunnel and El Paso Connected
Denver, Nov. 15—Connection has been made by the deep-drainage tunnel with the El Paso shaft, and it is stated that A. L. Burris, manager of the latter, expects to begin mining in the hitherto drowned levels in a few days.
graphic for visual presentation of text The ore in these limits is known to be exceptionally rich. What is supposed to be the main water course of the district is yet 70 ft. ahead of the tunnel breast.
graphic for visual presentation of text It is believed that it will drain the mines of the west side of the district, but that possibly it would have to be driven 12,000 ft. further to unwater the Bull hill section. The drainage tunnel was financed by the big mining companies of the camp.
graphic for visual presentation of text The El Paso company subscribed $133,000.

graphic for visual presentation of text In the C. K. & N. vein of the El Paso company a large body of high-grade ore has been opened in the south drift from the Fuller crosscut on the tunnel level. Twenty feet of drifting on the orebody has already been done.
graphic for visual presentation of text The 1000-ft. level of the El Paso shaft has been reclaimed and is being cleaned of the seven years' accumulation of debris.

Roosevelt Drainage Tunnel Struck Large Flow of Water
Cripple Creek Drainage
graphic for visual presentation of textDenver Correspondence
graphic for visual presentation of text On Friday night, Nov. 11, at a point 15,956 ft. from the portal of the Cripple Creek deep-drainage tunnel, a large flow of water was struck and so suddenly that some of the men employed barely escaped with their lives.
graphic for visual presentation of text At present the flow is about 12,000 gal. per min. from the portal, but it will probably decrease somewhat from that.
graphic for visual presentation of textIn the C. K. & N. property, just above the drainage tunnel on Beacon hill, it is stated that the water has dropped 70 ft. during the last four days.
graphic for visual presentation of textThe Portland mine is said to be dry in its lowest workings, which will save $10,000 per month in pumping expenses.
graphic for visual presentation of textThe El Paso mine is also dry and work will be commenced at once in the 1000-ft. level.
graphic for visual presentation of text No official measurements of the lowering of the water in the mines have yet been taken but it is said to be receding in all but the extreme eastern mines of the district.
graphic for visual presentation of text To date the approximate cost of the tunnel has been $545,000 and it was commenced in July, 1907; the depth of the tunnel below the average water level in the mines of the district is about 730 ft. Its course is north 44 deg. 20 min. east for 14,845 ft. to a point 65 ft. east of the main shaft of the El Paso mine on Beacon hill and thence north 70 deg. east toward the Vindicator shaft on Bull hill.
graphic for visual presentation of text At the heading where the work is going on the rock is comparatively dry. Whether the whole district will be permanently benefited by this new flow of water, will be definitely known in a few days.
