Water Lowering at Old Gold
A noticeable lowering of the water in the main shaft of the Old Gold company, on the western slope of Beacon hill, has taken place recently, and is attributed to the Roosevelt deep drainage tunnel.
The water has fallen 7 ft. below the station at the 400-ft. level, where previously the level was wet, and the miners found gum boots necessary, while ore trams were pushed out of the shaft with the wheels submerged.
The property is under lease to Joseph Brentlinger and associates, and is producing good average ore. The shaft is 480 ft. deep, and as soon as relief is further afforded by the drainage tunnel deeper mining will commence.

C. K. & N. and Old Gold Works Good
C. K. and N. and Old Gold.—These properties shipped over 1,200 tons of ore during the month of January. The C. K. and N. ore, it is said, returned values of $70 to the ton, while the Old Gold ore runs about $55 to the ton.
A rich shoot of ore has been encountered in the 380-foot level of the Old Gold. Most of the ore shipped from these properties during the past month came from the 300 and 380-foot levels. There is no water to contend with on either of these properties, which facilitates work.

Commander Removes Troops
Denver, Dec. 16.—A Republican special from Cripple Creek last night says:
All troops which have been stationed at the Old Gold, one of the big Beacon hill mines, were withdrawn to-day by order of Colonel Verdeckberg, the commander of the National Guard in this district. It is believed by the military commander and his advisers that the conditions no longer require military protection. The non-union men working can fully protect themselves and have so declared themselves.
The move is a significant one, indicating the confidence the military authorities have in the situation.
