Info Title:
Mr. Philip Argall & Brodie Mill
At a banquet to celebrate the completion of the second unit of cyanide plant for the treatment of low grade dump ore at Stratton's Independence, Cripple Creek, Philip Argall gave a speech containing interesting reminiscences.
graphic for visual presentation of text Eighteen years ago he commenced his connection with the cyanide process by going to Deadwood, South Dakota, in the interests of the owners of the MacArthur-Forrest patents. At this spot in the Black Hills a cyanide plant had been erected and had proved a failure at first, and advice was required.
graphic for visual presentation of text His second trip was to what is now the Brodie mill at Cripple Creek, where the cyanide process was also a failure. In both these cases the ore was ground fine and could not be leached; this was in the days before slime agitators.
graphic for visual presentation of text Nevertheless Mr. Argall was firmly convinced that cyanide treatment would be the most suitable for Cripple Creek ores, and by tongue and pen was persistent in his advocacy of its adoption. Indeed he then made a design for a treatment plant which was adopted 14 years later at Stratton's Independence.

graphic for visual presentation of text It was reliably reported last evening that, within a week, the old Brodie mill will be reopened, under entirely new management. Whether the mill will be leased or not, could not be learned, but no matter under what conditions the mill opens, there will be another outlet for the already congested condition of the ore market.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Brodie mill has a capacity of 60 tons a day, and when it opens there will be no difficulty in filling it with ore, and the mill can run full blast without losing an hour.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mill was one of the first in the district, and that it was closed, even temporarily, was surprising to all, and the news that it will again open will be hailed with delight by people who, at present, have no outlet for their ore.

Brodie Mill Helps Increase Mill-Grade Production
During the month of March, the Brodie mill were an important factor for the district's increase in mill-grade production. The increase in the mill-grade production is very gratifying. It is due to the increased capacity of the reduction plants treating Cripple Creek ores.

Info Title:
Short Description of the Brodie Mill
At Mound City we see a large cyanide mill which appears to be successfully solving the problem of the treatment of the Cripple Creek ores by the cyanide process, a process which may be roughly described thus : The rock and ore are ground very fine and then pass into vats containing cyanide of potassium, the acid of which dissolves both quartz and ore. Zinc filings or shavings are then thrown in and the gold precipitates on the filings and is cleaned off and saved.
