Cyanide Plant to Treat Union Mill Dump Soon Rady
The cyanide plant for the re-handling of the tailings dump of the Union mill at Florence, one of the plants owned by the United States Refining and Reduction Co., is about ready to work, according to Col. J. Q. McDonald, vice president of the company.
The mill will treat the immense tailings dump at this mill, which was collected in the early days.

Cyanide Tailings Treatment by U. S.. Reduction & Refining Co. at New Florence Plant
Cyanide Tailings Treatment.
An interesting plant which will be in operation around May, June is that of the United States Reduction & Refining Company, at Florence, Col. At this place are the large tailings dumps of the old Union plant and the Metallic Extraction Company.
There are upward of 300,000 tons of material in each dump, representing the tailings from the early application of the cyanide process on Cripple Creek ores.
The success which the company has met with in cyaniding old tailings at the Standard plant at Colorado City has led to the erection of the present plant at Florence. About 400 tons of tailings will be treated daily at the new plant, and a good net profit is anticipated.

U. S. R. & R. Co. Cyanide Plant at Union Mill
The United States Reduction and Refining Co. has ordered machinery for a cyanide plant at Florence, which will treat all tailings of the Union mill, which some years ago was the chief reduction plant of the company and handled a good portion of the Cripple Creek ores.
It is said the tailings will run better than $1 per ton and with some 100,000 tons of tailings a good profit should be reaped.

Cripple Creek District Shipments
Ore shipments from the district have been heavy the past few days, the larger portion of the ore coming from Bull and Beacon hills and Battle mountain.
Some of the mineral will go as high as $200 a ton, while several consignments by dump lessees are of $8, $9 and $10 ore.
The shipments over the narrow gauge were to the Union mill at Florence and the smelting works of the United States Reduction & Refining Co. at Canon City, while the major portion of the ore carried by the broad gauge lines was billed to the Standard plant at Colorado City.

United States Reduction & Refining Co. Rate Changes
Cripple Creek—An increase in the treatment rates on ores from this camp has been announced by the United States Refining & Reduction Co. of from 25 to 50 cents per ton on all ores except that from $8 and $10 in value, which remains unchanged.
The reason given by the company for the advance is that since the cut in open rates on the treatment of ores its mills have been operated at an increased expense, and frequently low-grade ore showing a pay sample had been handled at a loss. It is also claimed that in living up to the 24-hour settlement and taking care of long time contracts an increase in rates has become necessary to look after the heavy shipments in the open ore market.
The following is the change announced to go into effect on July 20:

Union Mill to Reopen
According to report, the big Union mill of the U. S. R. & R. Co., at Florence, will be put in operation again as the result of the recent decision of the management of the Golden Cycle Co. in refusing to make any more contracts to treat custom ore.
The U. S. R. & R. Co. is the only milling company of any consequence handling the output of the Cripple Creek district, with the exception of the Golden Cycle, and in view of the fact that the production of the camp is increasing it is very probable that it will be found necessary to re-open the Union plant.

Eagle Sampler Record Exemplify Surge in District Activities
A record has been made by the Eagle sampler, which shows that great activity is prevalent in the Cripple Creek district. During January 21,100 tons of ore were sampled, and now the tonnage is largely increased. In one day of two 9½ hr. shifts the plant sampled 1052.5 tons, which constitutes a record.
The ore is going to the mills at Colorado City and Florence. The Golden Cycle mine alone is shipping 200 tons per day. The reason for this activity is the reduction in rates charged by the United States R. & R. Co., which charges only $3.50 per ton for ores of $8 or less.

United States R. & R. Co. Florence Mill Improvements
Florence.—The United States Reduction and Refining Company has been carrying on a successful experiment with a more economical process of extracting gold from Cripple Creek ores.
All ore is now charred and chlorinated twice instead of once, as formerly, the result being the obtaining of more gold than by the old method, and the company claims to have at last secured a cheaper process of treating low-grade ore.

United States Reduction & Refining Co. Rate Changes
A new rate has been announced from Cripple Creek by the United States Reduction & Refining Co. of $3.50 a ton, including freight and treatment on ores shipped to the Florence and Colorado City plants, of the value of $8 and under.
The rate will apply to shipments made on and after today. The former rate on ore up to one-half ounce value was $4.50, freight and treatment.
It is expected the production of low grade ore will be materially increased by the new rate.

Union Mill Closes, Standard Mill Kept Open
Denver, Colorado.
Competition is Useful.
The decrease in the output of ore from the lower levels of the mines at Cripple Creek, due to the present trouble with water, and the opening of more than one mill to treat the oxidized ore, is undoubtedly the cause of the shut-down of the Union mill at Florence.
The United States Refining & Reduction Co. is diverting all its ore to the Standard mill at Colorado City, and whether the supply will increase enough to cause the speedy re-opening of the Union mill is a matter of some doubt.

United States Reduction & Refining Co's Canon City Smelter Rebuilds
United States Reduction and Refining Company.
Eight car-loads of structural steel have been received by this company for rebuilding that part of the plant recently destroyed by fire. All of this will be used in the construction of vat houses. The machine shops are completed, except placing the machinery, and the foundations for the refinery have been laid.
All the new buildings are on a much larger scale than that of those destroyed, and have many conveniences for handling the product. The sampler, which was in course of construction at the time of the fire, will be in operation within six weeks. It is a separate building, but is connected with the smelter and smelter yards by elevated tramways.

Arequa Mill Closes, Ore Sent to Union Mill
The plant of the Colorado Ore Reduction Company is shortly to close, in fact, almost all the ore formerly treated at the mill has been diverted to the new Union mill at Florence. The people owning the Union mill at Florence are practically those that own the Colorado plant down at Arequa, but rates are so excessively high here and the advantages so great in the valley that another plant was built down there and within a short time their local mill will be closed for good.
The passing of the local mills has been on for some time, and those acquainted with the condition of affairs knew that it would be but a short time that a custom mill could exist here in the district and make expenses, let alone pay a dividend on the money invested in the works.
