Blue Flag Workings Draft Well with Moffat Tunnel
T.R. Countryman, consulting engineer to the War Eagle Consolidated Mines Co., in reporting connection made on April 2 from the Blue Flag workings with the Moffat tunnel, stated that the "ventilation was thorough".
The entire tunnel and Blue Flag workings are completely ventilated with pure, fresh, cool air. The draft is so strong that a carbide-lamp cannot be kept alight in the drift.
The engineer further reports a streak of black sulphide in the east wall, more than six inches thick asssaying $25 in gold, with a width next to it of one foot assaying $19.40. This is in addition to 20 in. of ore opened in the drift.

Blue Flag Tunnel to Moffat Tunnel Connection
John W. Sheafer, Judge of the District Court, this week denied the application of L. T. Gray, claiming interest in the Moffat tunnel property, for a writ of injunction to prevent connection with the tunnel from the Blue Flag mine workings.
The War Eagle Consolidated Mines Co., the Blue Flag Gold Mining Co., the Moffat Tunnel & Transportation Co., and Hildreth Frost, attorney of this city {Cripple Creek], were named as defendants.
It was alleged in the complaint that damage would result "through the filling of the tunnel with bad air" if connection were permitted.
The War Eagle company is cross-cutting from its 1200-ft. level of the Blue Flag shaft on Raven hill to connect with the tunnel, in accordance with a contract with the Blue Flag Gold Mining Co., of which corporation Tully Scott of the Supreme Court of Colorado is president.
With connection made, ventilation will be afforded to the Blue Flag and War Eagle mines as well as to the tunnel.

Blue Flag Working to Connect with the Opehelia
The Blue Flag company is driving to connect with the Moffat or Ophelia tunnel, and thence through the War Eagle property to a point under the Scott or main shaft. Ore assaying about 1,25 oz. gold and 12 to 15 oz. silver per ton has been opened up on the 1200-ft. level of the Blue Flag by the War Eagle Consolidated company.
Work in the Blue Flag lateral is done under air-pressure on account of the presence of mine-gases, and except for the ore taken out in drifting no attention will be paid to mining until the connections are completed.

Ophelia/Moffat Tunnel Under Sheriff to Connect with Blue Flag
The Moffat tunnel heading is now in the Sheriff claim on Raven hill, one of the War Eagle group, at a distance of 1,5 miles from the portal, which is on the western slope of Gold hill about a mile south of Cripple Creek.
Development was commenced August 1 from the Blue Flag Gold Mining Co.'s main shaft, to connect with the Ophelia or Moffat tunnel, at a depth of 1150 ft., thence to a point directly under the Scott shaft of the War Eagle Consolidated Mines Co., and connection made therewith by raise. This work will be done under a contract between the Blue Flag company and the War Eagle Consolidated company, which now controls the Moffat tunnel.
With ventilation perfected through the two shaft connections, the Moffat tunnel will become a public utility and will be used for transportation and operating purposes by mining companies, mine owners, or their lessees, on properties along the line of the tunnel.

Ophelia Tunnel Illumination Method
While Candles can't be recommended as a means of lighting a tunnel or adit during construction, this is the type of Illumination chosen for the Ophelia Tunnel.
Practically everything that can be said in the favor of candles, or open-flame oil lamps, is that they require a much smaller initial outlay than electricity or acetylene, yet they are more expensive per unit of light than either acetylene or electricity, consume a greater amount of oxygen, and give off a correspondingly greater amount of noxious gases. Candles not only do not give enough light, but what they do supply is flickering and unsteady unless there are no drafts, and since they are quickly extinguished by the exhaust blasts from air drills they cannot be placed to light properly the work of the drillers; hence the efficiency of a high-priced drillman is greatly reduced. Candles are often wasted or dropped into the muck-pile, and item of loss which may amount to a considerable sum in the long run.

Ophelia Tunnel to Be Sold
Denver, Aug. 23—The Ophelia, which in the early days of Cripple Creek was known as the Moffat-Bush tunnel, is to be sold at auction, Sept. 22, to satisfy a debt of $371,580. The tunnel is 1½ miles long, and penetrates Gold and Raven hills.
This illustrates the history of most of the long transportation tunnels in the State. Most of them have proved of enormous benefit to the owners of the mines on the surface, but nearly all of them have been a loss to those whose money first built them.

Ophelia tunnel as a Drainage Tunnel
The Ophelia tunnel, cutting the granite at the west base of Gold hill, has an elevation of 9268 ft., and when 2600 ft. in length is reported to have had a flow amounting to 2100 gal. per min. According to Lindgren and Ransome's latest report on the geology of the Cripple Creek district, this tunnel water came entirely from breccia in fissure zones connected with the main volcanic neck.
This tunnel became dry in 1898 with the drainage of the Standard tunnel which had been under construction for about two years previous.

Cripple Creek, Oct., 20.—The greatest project ever proposed in the Cripple Creek district is now assured, plans having been drawn for the erection of an immense sampler and mill at the west entrance of the Ophelia tunnel one mile south of Cripple Creek.
The project is a gigantic one and calls for a mill second to none in the state. The work of finishing the tunnel, which is now only half completed, will also be arranged for by the sale of stock of the company at the same time.
The tunnel will cut the Bull hill portion and will carry and drain away much water which will be an incalculable benefit to all the mines in that region.
C. C. Chapin of Boston, president of the Cripple Creek and Pueblo Railroad company which has just been incorporated, and who is the owner of the tunnel, left yesterday with plans in his pocket for Colorado Springs.
His scheme will be financed in Colorado Springs and Boston.

Alamo to Be Worked Through the Ophelia Tunnel
(From the Cripple Creek Press.)
—————————
ALAMO.
The management of the Alamo company has decided to do all work through the Ophelia tunnel instead of through the shaft which has been used until recently.
The depth obtained in the tunnel workings is about 450 feet, the expense of working here being only about $6 per foot, while the cost of sinking in the shaft is about $20 per foot.
The drift which is being run has about 200 feet further to go before getting directly under the shaft and connection will be made at that point with the shaft by means of an upraise.
The drift along the vein has so far accomplished a distance of about 1,000 foot, the company having been at work for the past three or four months.
Besides drifting a considerable amount of crosscutting has been done to explore the territory and more will be done as soon as the drift has been run the other 200 feet. The vein shown about 3½ feet in width and assays have been obtained running as high as $300 to the ton.
All work will be done through the tunnel until the workings are connected with the air shaft.

The price to be paid will be very large for a mere lease, but there being from 6 to 10 feet of smelting ore in the ground where cut by the tunnel, the lease is worth considerable money.

Gold Exploration & Tunnel Co. Inquiry
Gold Exploration & Tunnel Co.
5335. (Boston, Mass.) Please give us any information in regard to the Gold Exploration & Tunnel Co., head offices at Denver, Colo., incorporated under the laws of West Virginia and capitalized for $5,000,000. What value is there attached to this stock?
Ans.: The officers and directors of this company are: president, David H. Moffat, president of the First National Bank, Denver; vice-president, Syl. T. Smith; secretary, W. F. Jones; treasurer, Walter S. Cheesman, president of the Denver Union Water Co.; directors, Charles J. Hughes, Major L. E. Campbell and Eben Smith, all of Denver.
The above parties, however, have sold out their interests in the company to Boston, Chicago and Detroit parties, and so soon as the present officers and directors can be got together, some of them being now abroad, new officers and directors will be elected, comprising or representing the new owners. The company is capitalized at 5,000,000 shares, fully paid and non-assessable, of the par value of $1 each.
The company owns the Ophelia tunnel, with all the rights appertaining thereto. Such tunnel starts in on the western edge of the Cripple Creek ore bearing district, a little south of the town of Cripple Creek, and will traverse the entire centre of the district, along a line of producing mines, having for its eastern terminus the shaft of the Victor mine on the eastern edge of the district, or a total length of 14,000 feet or about 2¾ miles.
It will cut the Victor shaft at a depth of 1,250 feet below the surface.
The tunnel is nine feet by 10 feet in the clear, with double track of 30 pounds steel rails. It has already been driven over 4,000 feet and work is being vigorously pushed. It is equipped with complete up-to-date plant of
machinery, including air compressors, motor engines for transportation purposes, etc.
The tunnel (1) is at the lowest practical depth; (2) will strike the general trend of the dykes and ore bodies at right angles; (3) tapping such ore bodies at depth, thereby dispensing with hoisting ore and pumping water, admitting of the ore being mined at the minimum of cost.
The company has secured valuable leases on different properties along its route, for the mining of the ore bodies from the level of the tunnel. It is proposed to erect sampling, ore treatment and electric power plants at the portal of the tunnel. The revenue of the company will be:
(1) royalties from the owners of patented surface properties, for transportation and drainage through the tunnel;
(2) profits from the operation of leases granted to the company by the owners of patented sur-???
??? from acquiring, on moderate terms, from the and ore treatment plants to be erected at the entrance of the tunnel;
(4) profits from power supplied to the owners of patented surface ground in themselves, working their properties from and through the tunnel;
(5) profits from acquiring on moderate terms, from the owners, surface ground, by reason of probable important discoveries of mineral veins in the tunnel, not known to the surface owners.
The company also owns about 50 acres of ground at or near the mouth of the tunnel, especially valuable for dump room, sites for sampling works, ore treatment plant, electric power plant, etc. Of the capital of the company, 1,500,000 shares were placed in the treasury, a large part of which remains unsold. The treasury stock is now being sold at 35 cents, and the proceeds used for development purposes.

The Gold Exploration Tunnel company, operating the Smith-Moffat tunnel under Gold hill, has closed down temporarily to install another big compressor and put in a compressed air engine to haul the waste and ore out of the big bore.
Some time next week work will be resumed, when twelve air drills will be in operation. There will be two compressors, and should one get out of order, the other will be ready for immediate use.
The tunnel is now almost 5,000 feet under the hill. They will be the first people to use a compressed air engine in the state{of Colorado], and when work is again started, the cars can be hauled out the long tunnel as rapidly as they wish.
The company intends equipping to work most systematically and at the same time get the best results.

--------------
Gold Exploration Company Will Make Many Improvements.

THE TUNNEL IS RAPIDLY BEING DRIVEN TOWARD BULL HILL. A MILL IS ALSO LIKELY TO BE CONSTRUCTED.
--------------
If the expectations of the Gold Exploration and Tunnel Company are realized, that property will very shortly be shipping at least 500 tons of ore a day from the big bore that is slowly but surely going through toward Bull hill.
Mr. C.C. Chapin, of the Chapin Brokerage company of Boston, accompanied by parties from the East, arrived in the city{Cripple Creek] yesterday and will remain here several days inspecting the property.
The Chapin company have the property under bond and lease from the Smith-Moffat company, and should the bond be taken up by the Eastern people they will become owners of five-sevenths of the property.
The Eastern people contemplate big improvements down the gulch where the bore is penetrating the ground.
Some time between now and the first of the coming year they will have completed a big sampler to handle all the ore mined. All of it will be sampled before it goes to the mills and smelters.
Some people are now experimenting with the low grade ore now being found in the tunnel and should their experiments prove successful, it is believed that a mill will be erected on the property to treat the ore.
At one point in the tunnel there has been encountered a vein running from twelve to twenty feet in width, that will average in value $12.80 in gold to the ton.
The company has a lease on the Anaconda ground from their level up to the lower workings of the Anaconda, and when the vein of the Anaconda is encountered, a drift will be started north and air drills will be used to push the work as rapidly as possible.
Before any ore is shipped the tracks of both the Midland Terminal and Florence & Cripple Creek roads will be extended to the mouth of the tunnel.

Ophelia Tunnel Going at 15 Feet a Day
THE OPHELIA TUNNEL
--------------
Making Headway at the Rate of 15 Feet Per Day.
--------------
ALL THE WATER HAS DISAPPEARED
--------------
The Ophelia tunnel, under the management of Mr. Parfet, is making headway rapidly. On an average it is being driven 15 feet each day. So far no attempt has been made to drift on any of the many veins that have been cut, but it is likely that prospecting in that line will shortly start.
There is one thing very remarkable about the Ophelia tunnel just now. It will be remembered that a few months ago a regular river was flowing from it, and now to-day there is not a drop of water in sight.
A few days ago the engineer discovered that his boilers were about dry and that the tanks were empty, and it actually became necessary to pull the fires until water could be had.
The supply now comes from the little reservoir below the road that was built to make ice.
Within a very short time the Ophelia tunnel will be lighted by electricity and not only that but the cars are to be run by the same power - a regular trolley line.
The speed of the cars will be about ten miles per hour, but this can be increased if necessary, as the rails used in the tunnel are monsters, the same weight in fact as that used by the Rio Grande railroad [might mean F&CC].

MR. CHAPIN, WHO IS PROMOTING THE DEAL, TALKS ENTERTAININGLY OF THE FEELING IN THE EAST TO CRIPPLE CREEK AND PREDICTS THAT THIS CAMP WILL HAVE A BOOM.
--------------
Mr. C. C. Chapin, of the Chicago Brokerage company, and representative of the Boston gold mining syndicate of Cripple Creek, was in town yesterday looking mining property. Mr. Chapin, in speaking of Eastern capital, said:
"I am very well acquainted with moneyed men of the East who are going to invest in Cripple Creek mines. When I left Boston a few days ago, Cripple Creek was all the talk there. Myself and Mr. Parfet, our mineral expert, are here in behalf of Boston people, and are thinking of taking hold of the Moffat-Bush tunnel.
''I do not know of any camp in the world that is more substantial than Cripple Creek.
''In 1866 I was in Alder Gulch, Montana, and then when the Sammon river excitement was so popular, I was there.
In fact, every great mining excitement of any consequence since 1866 I have visited, but never in the whole course of my many years of experience have I witnessed such a marvelous camp as that of Cripple Creek.
''The syndicate which I represent is ready and willing to invest in Cripple Creek mines, but we must be given a run for our money.
A boom is near at hand for this camp, and all through the East I heard moneyed men talking about the output of gold of the Cripple Creek district for 1898."
Mr. Chapin refused to make any definite statement about the Ophelia, or Smith-Moffat tunnel, but from other sources it is learned that the people he represents are shortly to take work in hand.
That the merits of the tunnel have been gone into fully is corroborated by the people who live in that vicinity, as they say a small army of experts in the last sixty days have been traveling over the ground and sampling the rock on the big dump.

Bush-Moffat Tunnel Started Up Again
The starting up of work in the Bush-Moffat tunnel, Cripple Creek, is regarded by the mining men of that place as one of the most important enterprises of the year.
It is now nearly under the apex of Gold Hill, and the breast is only 500 or 600 feet from the Anaconda lines.
If work is steadily maintained during this year it is believed that it will open the rich ground in the vicinity of Anaconda.

Ophelia or Smith-Moffat Tunnel to Start Up Again, with a lease on Blanche
WANT BLUE BELL GROUND
--------------
Moffatt Wants a Lease on the Blanche.
--------------
AND HE IS TO GET IT
--------------
WHEN IT IS GRANTED IT IS GIVEN OUT THAT WORK ON THE SMITH-MOFFAT TUNNEL WILL BE RESUMED.
--------------
D.H. Moffat intends to start the old tunnel, sometimes known as the Ophelia and at others as the Smith-Moffat, that enters Gold hill a short distance south of the city{Cripple Creek] limits.
The Englishmen got sick of their bargain after putting up only a small amount of money, and the title to the ground has reverted to the original owner, or owners.
Some people say that Mr. Moffat is the sole man in the enterprise, but others insist that Eben Smith is also interested in the bore.
Be that as it may, that it is to start up again must be true, for the tunnel management that at one time had a lease on the Blanche, one of the properties of the Blue Bell company, have asked for a renewal of their option to work the claim, and while the lease has not been made out at this writing it will be within a day or two.
The tunnel has now entered the mountain a distance of some 2,400 feet and in Blanche ground it is known that a vein was cut, but before prospecting it work on the tunnel was suspended.
That its prospective value must have been regarded favorably is evidenced by the fact that the lease that was held is to be renewed.

Short Description of the Moffatt Tunnel
Below the town on the bank of the creek we found a gigantic tunnel scheme in progress, called the Moffatt tunnel, which is being driven in to crosscut the main portion of the mining area to find what the ore bodies will do at considerable depth. This, whilst a sort of prospecting tunnel, expects to encounter many as yet unknown leads and veins, and to undercut others already known on the surface, such as the Anaconda.
It will also be utilized as a drainage and exportation tunnel. We understood that it was to go clear through the district by way of Anaconda, on to the Victor mine and Bull hill. Such a tunnel, if completed, will be a great boon both to science and Cripple Creek, by showing us a little more what Cripple Creek is made of, and clearing up many doubtful points relating to the continuity with depth of its ore deposits.

Ophelia Tunnel Buildings and Machinery Erection
The Ophelia tunnel is one of the big things which will explore Gold hill, starting in about one-half mile south of Cripple Creek.
The building and machinery now in process of erection are of the most substantial character. The two 100-horse power boilers are in place and the 6-drill Norwalk compressor, the largest in the camp, was set up yesterday. The compressor room is 34x56, and store and blacksmith shop each 20x30.
The tunnel is the property of the Cripple Creek Gold Exploration and Tunnel company, of which Moffat, Brush and Ray of Denver are members.

Gold Exploration Tunnel Working
With the large number of tunnel projects now projected and in actual progress the auriferous hills in the great Cripple Creek district are certainly going to be thoroughly explored and much of their rich treasure brought to light.
The Gold Exploration tunnel, a little further down below the Gold & Globe tunnel, has begun the work of building at the mouth of its tunnel to cut Gold and Bull hills and the machinery is expected to be on the ground in a few days.

Gold Exploration Tunnel Co. Work Begun
Big Projects Under Way
—————————
Messrs. Wm. H. Bush, E. M. Ray and Major L. E. Cambell came in from Denver last evening. These gentlemen are the chief promoters in one of the largest mining prospects yet attempted in the district.
They represent the Gold Exploration Tunnel company of which Mr. Bush is president. In speaking of their plans Mr. Bush said:
"We have begun work on the tunnel which starts in about one mile south of the city of Cripple Creek near the Gold Geyser mill and heads in the direction of the Victor mine. Its total length will be 12,000 feet. It will cut through Raven hill and attain a depth of 1,589 feet under Bull hill.
Air compressors and a complete plant of new machinery has been ordered and rapid work will soon be in progress."
