5197. (Springfield, Mass. ) Enclosed find prospectus of the McKinley Mining Co., Cripple Creek, Colo. Can you give me any information in regard to said company? Are they working the property? You will notice that the transfer office is Colorado Springs, but no street or number is given. I have written to Mr. Franc O. Wood several times, but receive no reply.

Ans.: The Golden Gate group of this company, stated in the prospectus to lie "just east of the town of Victor," is two and a half miles distant, measured by section lines, and well outside the recognized gold bearing area. The celebrated Victor mine, also mentioned in the prospectus as only "a few thousand feet distant" to the northwest, is also fully two miles distant, with no known special geological connection.
Whether the company has men at work on this speculative property could only be ascertained by visiting the place, as it is not an active or well known locality.
The company has a lease on the Wide Awake claim on Raven Hill, belonging to the Wide Awake G. M. Co., and holds an option to purchase same at $200,000. Men are said to be at work on this claim.

The Wide Awake lode on Raven hill has been leased to Angus McDonald. Machinery will be installed and active operations resumed.

Wide Awake—Lessees operating this Raven hill mine have opened a 5-ft. vein in an upraise from the first level, about 50 ft. below the surface, and have received settlement for one carload of ore at the rate of $25 per ton.
The ore now being saved is estimated at $40 per ton.
