Strong Mine Ships Regularly
Strong—This mine, which was recently sold for $60,000 to Colorado Springs parties, is a regular shipper. The ore is not high grade, the best returns so far not yielding more than $50 per ton net.
Still the vein is nearly 12 ft. wide, the pay streak about 2 ft., and the balance will yield well when treated at the mill. At this mine the owners will sink a shaft 200 ft.

Strong Mine Blown to Pieces
As a result of an attempt by the owners of mines at Cripple Creek to resume work that camp has been the scene of great excitement of late. It has in fact had the appearance of an armed camp. The owners were anxious to begin shipping ore over the new roads that are now within reach of their mines. To do this they realized that they must put non-union men to work and give them an ample guard of deputy sheriffs.
Friday morning a party of masked miners visited the Strong mine where non-union men were at work and ordered the men out. Immediately after the warning had been given two large blasts were placed by the strikers, one in the shaft and the other below the boiler.
A fuse was attached and the people in the neighborhood were told to get away. As the fuse was burning it was discovered that there were 46 boxes of giant powder in the mine, which could be ignited by the blasts. Several of those instrumental in the destruction of the property rushed to the mine and carried the powder to a safe distance.
If it had exploded a portion, if not all, the town of Victor would have been destroyed. The mine property was completely destroyed. The explosion was heard all over the camp. The timbering was blown in all directions, and portions of the boiler were found after all was over several hundred feet away.
Rumors were circulated for a long time after that all the workmen had been killed by the explosion, but this is probably not correct, as some of them were seen to leave the property and go towards Cripple Creek somewhat frightened.
An hour or two later the striking miners, to accentuate their work of destruction, set fire to the shaft house and it burned for over an hour. The army from Denver witnessed the blaze.
It having been reported that three men were entombed in the Strong mine, Saturday a party of strikers went down the shaft to investigate. The three men consisting of Sam P. McDonald, the superintendent, Charles Robinson, foreman of the mine, and John Baggett, the engineer, were found uninjured and were brought to the surface.

On Monday Samuel McDonald and his two companions, who were taken prisoners from the shaft house of the Strong mine the day after it was exploded, were exchanged for three strikers captured by the Denver contingent of deputies during the skirmish of Saturday morning.

Commander Removes Troops
Denver, Dec. 16.—A Republican special from Cripple Creek last night says:
All troops which have been stationed at the Strong mine were withdrawn to-day by order of Colonel Verdeckberg, the commander of the National Guard in this district. It is believed by the military commander and his advisers that the conditions no longer require military protection. The non-union men working can fully protect themselves and have so declared themselves.
The move is a significant one, indicating the confidence the military authorities have in the situation.

Strong Working Well
One of the best properties in the district and one about which the least is said, is that of the Strong Gold Mining Company, on Battle Mountain, for within its area of seven and one-half acres is an ore body that rivals in size and quantity anything developed in the district.
At the present time the mine is working two shifts and producing an average of two carloads, or 50 tons of ore, per day, the grade of which, it is understood, will average in the neighborhood of two ounces to the ton, meaning a monthly tonnage of 1500, with a gross value of $60,000 per month.

Battle Mountain Pumping Rumors
Pumping on Battle Mtn.
It is rumored that negotiations are pending for the united and systematic handling of the water situation in the mines located on Battle Mtn.
The scheme consists of pumping at one of the deep shafts of that locality, either the Gold Coin or the Stratton's Independence No. 1. The latter being the deeper of the two is looked upon with the most favor.
The cost would be distributed between the mines that would be benefited by this scheme, consisting of the Portland, Ajax, Strong, Independence, and Granite.

Cripple Creek—Although particulars are not obtainable at present, it is known that a large body of good ore has been disclosed in the Strong mine on Battle mountain at a depth of 1000 ft.
From four to six cars are shipped daily, one-third of which goes to the smelters.

Strong Mine Stuff in 1908
The Strong mine is one of the steady producers of the district, the ore being almost entirely in the granite, near the contact. There is good ore at depth, and I anticipate production for many years. Several million dollars have been paid to the owners during the past ten years; it is a close corporation, having only three or four owners.
Their present output should not be less than 2500 tons per month of $30 ore.

Strong to Sink to 1100 Feet
Sinking is in progress in the main shaft of the Strong Gold Mining Co., at Victor, and will be continued to the 1100-ft. level, or until water prevents further sinking. This level will correspond with the 1500-ft. level of the Portland No. 2 shaft, the deepest of the Battle Mountain district.
It is believed that the oreshoot under development on the main Strong vein, at the 1000-ft. level has proved the richest orebody disclosed to date. The mine is shipping an average of 4 cars per day to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado City.
The total production of the Strong mine is not published, but it is a matter of record that the company had paid out in dividends $2,475,000 to the close of 1903. At a conservative estimate the company will have distributed not less than $3,500,000 in dividends to date.

Strong in Good vein Adjacent to Queen of the Hill
Old mines and old miners are making good: as a result of recent work two rich gold discoveries have recently been made. The first was at the Strong mine, Battle mountain, near the surface, and the second, at a depth of 750 ft., on the American Eagles property, located personally by the late W. S. Stratton.
An 'old timer', George Furst, has opened up a rich vein, on the upper Strong fraction, immediately adjacent and cutting into a later location the Queen of the Hills, of the Portland company.
Samples taken across 2,5 ft. of vein matter, have returned $75 to $800 per ton. Furst has taken out about 45 tons and his first shipment will be loaded next week. He will install an electric hoist if returns are as good as the assays.
