4767. (Springfield, Mass.) Kindly give me what information you can regarding the Hawkeye Gold Mining Co., Cripple Creek, Col., mine located on Little Hill, Bull Mountain, office of the company, 220 Broadway, New York, St. Paul building. Joseph St. Martin, president; Horace Granfield, secretary.

Ans.: The Hawkeye Gold Mining Company still maintains an office in New York city, but no one connected with the company or at all capable of answering any questions covering it will be there for a few weeks. The address of the secretary, Horace Granfield, is No. 1 B. & M. Block, corner Seventeenth and Stout streets, Denver, Colo., which is a local accommodation office for the company.
He spends the greater portion of the year in Colorado, mostly at Cripple Creek, where he has widely scattered interests. We have obtained the following information about the company from him:

This company is capitalized at 1,500,000 shares of $1 each, of which 300,000 shares are in the treasury, and about $5,000 in cash. It is not listed on any exchange, as it is practically a close corporation. Not a single share is owned in Colorado.

The company owns the Springton and Valley claims, representing about 16 acres of patented ground, on Brind mountain (sometimes known as Little Bull mountain), in the east half of section 4, about two miles southeast of Victor.

There is a good plant of machinery on the Springton claim, and a shaft house 57 feet long by 22 feet wide. There is a double compartment shaft about 100 feet deep, and systematic and vigorous development work is being carried on. From seven to ten men are constantly employed.

Experienced local capitalists who have been prominently identified with Cripple Creek from its inception in 1891, and are said to have been very successful, are developing properties in the neighborhood of the above claims.

We may add, however, that on the strength of statements made by parties in Colorado in whom we have the utmost confidence, we should be disinclined to advise a purchase of this stock at this juncture.

Hawkeye Gold Mine.
5032. (Providence, R. I.) Can you inform me in regard to the Hawkeye gold mine? It is in Cripple Creek and close to the Gold Coin and Independence.

Ans.: A full answer was published in the "Investor" of March 10, 1900. The property cannot be truthfully said to be near either the Gold Coin or the Independence mines, being on Brind mountain (sometimes called Little Bull Mountain) at least a mile southeast of the Gold Coin and Independence, and in a locality distinctly outside the present recognized ore bearing area and yet to be proved as a continuation thereof.
