Gillett Milling & Reduction Co. To Erect Cyanide Plant
The Gillett Milling & Reduction Company, which owns a considerable tract of land just east of the town of Gillett, has just contracted for the erection of a large cyanide plant.
The mill will be capable of treating 100 tons of ore every 24 hours, and contracts have already been signed with several mines in that vicinity to treat their low grade rock.
The cyanide process is becoming very popular in the district, and cyanide mills are being erected in all sections of the camp.

Gillett Area Has Many Cyanide Mills
The cyanide mill proposition seems to be centering in and around Gillett, a small town on the outskirts of the Cripple Creek district. There are three mills in active operation, two in course of construction and several being planned.
There is much talk about the oxidized ores of this section of the camp, and from the results so far obtained, there is every indication that Trachyte, Cow and Sheep mountains will be able to furnish enough ore to be treated by cyanide to keep a dozen mills in operation.
There are a number of men who own extensive acreage on one or more of these mountains who are making a thorough test of this oxidized formation. If they find the ores to be of much value as to warrant treatment, mills will be erected on all of the properties.

The Gillett section of the camp is now well known as a big cyaniding proposition, nearly all the ore in that vicinity being susceptible to the cyanide process.
A number of other companies will watch the progress of this mill with eagerness, for as soon as positive results are obtained, a number of other companies will erect mills in this section.

Gillett Cyanide Mill About Completed
The new cyanide mill which is being built by the Gillett Cyanide Company, located on Lincoln mountain, will be completed this week, and within a very short time the machinery will be working and treating the low grade ore of that section. The mill is equipped with a 100 horse-power electric motor and has a capacity of 100 tons of ore per day. The mill, when completed, will be one of the best and fully equipped mills in the country.
The ore to be treated at the new plant will come from Lincoln mountain, where preparations are being made on several properties to bring down an enormous pile of rock.

Gillett Cyanide Mill Description
At the present writing the Cripple Creek Cyanide Company have just completed a mill at Gillett and expect to commence operations soon. The Gillett mill has 6 tanks of 130 tons capacity, and dry crushing is practiced which is undoubtedly preferable where the product required is coarse and no separation of sands and slimes is necessary for treatment. Fineness of crushing is 8 mesh.
The following diagram show the process of crushing employed in the Gillett mill:
1. From bins the ore goes by belt conveyor to grizzly with inch spaces, the oversize from which goes to gyratory crusher and the undersize to the first rolls.
2. From the first rolls crushed material goes to eight-mesh screen, which delivers undersize by belt conveyor to elevator, and thence to finished product bin.
3. The oversize goes to finishing rolls, which joins the undersize from the preceding trommel to finished product bin.
4. From these bins the material is delivered by chutes to the leaching tanks.
The crushing plants is comparatively simple, but in some respects the plant is unique, as are also some of the methods of treatment which it is proposed to employ.
It will be seen from the scheme of crushing that the finished product is passed over an eight-mesh screen and the undersize and oversize go to separate bins. The advantage to be derived from this is difficult to see, as the entire product should be readily leachable without any slime treatment.
It is proposed to spray the ore as it enters the bins with bromo-cyanogen solution, to serve the double purpose of settling the dust and assisting in extracting the values.
It is further proposed to heat the solution in the tanks by means of compressed air introduced at the bottom after passing through iron pipes heated by passing through a fireplace, the air to serve the double purpose of heating and furnishing oxygen to the solution.
As the plant has not yet started operations the value of this method of treatment can only be speculated upon. But the benefit to be derived seems rather doubtful, as heating the solution to anything above ordinary summer temperature would probably result in an undue loss of cyanide without a proportionate increase of extraction.
The method of precipitation is the ordinary one by means of zinc shavings, and no particular difficulty in this direction seems to have been encountered.

The lessees have a contract with the Gillette cyanide mill, which recently started up, to furnish them with from 100 to 125 tons daily, and while the ore that is being mined only runs from $6 to $10 to the ton, yet a nice profit will be realized by the lessees at the end of each month, as it is estimated that there are several hundreds of thousands of tons of this ore on the Los Angeles territory.

Gillett Cyanide Mill Closed, a Year's Progress in Cyaniding Did Not Help
Since the last report of the condition of cyaniding in the Cripple Creek district given in Mining Reporter (September 1, 1904), many changes have taken place as regards the mills in active operation, but comparatively little in the general milling practice. The year has been marked by exceptional activity in mill construction but closes with but a slight increase of tonnage over that reported a year ago. Only two mills, the Homestake and the R. E. A. and A., were then running with an approximate capacity of 300 tons per day. Four mills are now in active operation, but the aggregate tonnage does not exceed 375 tons per day.
The Gillette mill, which was just completed a year ago, has been in intermittent operation, but is now closed down. It is reported that the installation of roasters is contemplated. Straight cyanide solution has been used instead of bromo cyanide, as was at first proposed by the former superintendent.
The Gillett mill has a 130 tons Capacity with 6 Tanks with an Approximate capacity of 130 tons. The Crushing mesh is 8.
As a rule the nature of the ore in the district does not admit of cyanidation without roasting, to any great depth, but an area including portions of Bull, Ironclad and Globe hills seems to be an exception to the general rule.

Gillett Cyanide Mill Becomes Jo Dandy Mill
Denver, Colorado.
Competition Between Cyanidation and Chlorination.
—New Mill.
With the 16% reduction in the output for 1906 for the Cripple Creek District, compared with that of 1905, has come a corresponding pressure for the reduction of treatment charges. Cyanidation has locked horns with chlorination in what promises to be a death struggle and all who are interested are anxiously awaiting the outcome.
The Gillett cyanide mill has been purchased by the new management of the Jo Dandy and is being removed to that property.
Altogether, it seems as though cyanidation were destined soon to triumph. Bromo-cyanidation will now have a fair chance, and it would not be strange if it were to make a better showing than it has in previous trials.
