That the late Mr. Stratton had abundant faith in the future and believed in deep mining was evidenced by the amount of work he did on Bull and other hills.
An example is that in the Longfellow shafts considerable lateral work was done.

Colorado Spring, August 4.—One of the biggest ore bodies ever opened in the Cripple Creek district has been encountered in the bottom level of the Longfellow. At a depth of 225 feet below the collar and eight feet from the shaft a vein has been encountered and opened for better than four feet. The rock averages five ounces to the ton, which is indicative of one of the biggest ore shoots of that hill.
Sinking is to be resumed as fast as possible for the extension of the big ore shoot that the Vindicator people are breaking in their eighth level adjoining, and which, if it continues to surface in the Longfellow, will yield thousands of dollars' worth of ore to the operators.

Colorado Springs, Oct. 26.—Lessee Bilbert and associates, who are operating blocks of the Longfellow claim, belonging to the Stratton estate and located on Bull Hill, are sending out regular shipments of $50 ore.
The ore is being mined from a four-foot vein a short distance from the shaft in the 250-foot level. The lessees are now considering sinking the shaft another 100 feet for the purpose of obtaining additional stoping ground.

The Longfellow G. M. Co. is preparing to start in on regular shipments. This property is located on Bull hill and adjoins the Vindicator.

Cripple Creek—The Longfellow Nos. 1 and 2, on the Stratton estate, are again in operation after a long shut down. These mines are located on Bull hill, adjoining the Vindicator estate, below the town of Independence.
Holman & Moore, leasing on the north end of No. 2, are drifting on two veins. The shaft on the south end is being retimbered by Lessee McGraw and associates and machinery will later on be installed.

Rich discoveries have been made on the Longfellow mines of the Stratton estate on Bull hill. The discovery was made by winze from the 500-ft. level of the Llewellyn shaft on the Longfellow. This property is operated by the Excelsior M. L. & E. Co. of Denver, under long lease. The ore shipped is returning 5 oz. per ton.

The Excelsior company, operating the Longfellows of the Stratton estate, is mining a high average grade of ore between the fifth and sixth levels. During March, nearly 200 tons sent to the Golden Cycle mill, mined from a vein 10 ft. wide, assayed better than 5 oz. gold per ton, the last settlement being $74.40.
