This sadly not so sharp image of the Hawkeye Mine operations on Bull Hill is cropped from a much larger photo showing Bull Hill from the Portland No. 3 shaft. In foreground lower right the main line of the 3-foot Golden Circle Railroad is seen, crossing over the High Line tracks of the Trolley and Short Line operations.
The mine is self is seen at the left-hand side, showing a smaller headframe and a small shed to hold the hoist apparatus, located just beyond the cut of the High Line. This was a newer shaft then the Discovery shaft, which was located this side of the cut, but most likely abandoned before the Golden Circle roadbed covered that shaft, as that makes more sense than they having to make a new shaft for a railroad to cross over their claim. But I am not certain, either way, this mine never became big, and the claim was part of a group of in total 5-claims.
From a 1903 Portland map I see two shafts on the Hawkeye claim, making that shed like structure near top, beyond the headframe this most likely second shaft, most likely covering a windlass type of operation.
I did procure the colored version of this image. Source was grayish, or in common speech black & white. Used an online service and tweaked and worked with image to get what looks best to my eyes at the moment.Hawkeye Mine Operations on Bull Hill
