Orphan Bell With Good Indications of Mineral
A two days' jaunt on horseback took me from Rhyolite hill, on the north, to Grouse mountain, on the south, and from Pisgah, on the west, to Wilson creek, on the east, within which boundaries some four thousand claims have been located.

The greater part of those have nothing more than the assessment work done upon them, and in many instances, this has been so indifferently done, and with such an utter abandon and disregard of the statues, that they cannot be held for a moment to comply with the legal requirements.

But, in traversing Ennis, Globe, Gold, Bull, Tenderfoot, Womack, Mineral and a score or more of hills in the district, sources of Cripple, Wilson, Requa, Squaw and other water courses, I came upon scores of properties that were being developed with more or less vigor and intelligence, some with tunnels or inclines, others with shafts or open cuts, and the owners of each full of hope and expectations.

Among those having already good indications of mineral is the Orphan Belle Mine on Bull Mountain.

Orphan Bell Group Worked by Several Sets of Lessees
ORPHAN BELL GROUP.—This group of claims on Bull Hill is being worked by several sets of lessees, two of whom have recently erected steam hoists, and are prepared to do deep mining.

A set of lessees have just started to drive from the bottom of the incline shaft, 170 ft. The shaft was sunk in 1892. Shipments are being regularly made from the Munger lease, the ore sampling from 2 to 4 oz.

Orphan Bell Group Worked by Several Sets of Lessees
ORPHAN BELL.—These properties, containing about 25 acres of patented ground on Bull Hill, are being worked on lease.

The Munger Lease is a steady shipper, and the ore is being extracted from the 170-ft. level;

the Granville lease is not a regular shipper; the shaft is being sunk to the 100-ft. level, and at that point a crosscut will be necessary to intersect the vein.

The Wolcott lease has a shaft 250 ft. deep, but at present they are not shipping, although shipments have been made from an upper level.

The Maloney lease is being vigorously worked. The shaft has been sunk 120 ft. and sinking will be pushed until the 200-ft. level is reached.

The Parrot lease is being worked on the vein, at an incline, the present depth of shaft being nearly 200 ft. The vein is well defined, and about 3 ft. wide, and the pay streak is 10 in. wide.

Orphan Belle Being Improved by Lessees
Orphan Belle.—This property, on Bull Hill, has shown much improvement, an ore chute having been found at the depth of 200 ft. by one of the lessees. Machine drills are now being put at work to prove its extent.

It is reported that an English company has secured an option on the Orphan Belle properties until December 15th.

There are six steam hoists at work, all erected by lessees.

Orphan Bell Lessee Maloney Working Hard
Mining Record—Mr. R. M. Maloney is keeping up production at the Orphan Bell, where he made a sensational strike some weeks ago. Last week he sent out 100 tons of ore and expects to keep this rate up. The stuff went to the Cripple Creek Sampler.

The shaft is being continued down. It is now forty feet below the 300-foot level. A new station will be cut at the 450-foot level and the indications are that a larger ore chute which will be found when that depth is reached.

The level has been driven 315 feet all is in ore with the exception of the ninety feet in the south drift. This drift still has 170 feet to go before it reaches the Buena Vista side line and it will be opened for the full length.

Orphan Belle Robbed
STOLE 600 POUNDS OF ORE.
——————
Masked Men at Cripple Creek Rob Orphan Belle Mine.
CRIPPLE CREEK, Col., Sep. 1.—Early this morning three masked men entered the shafthouse of the Orphan Belle Mine on Bull Hill, and covering the engineer, blacksmith, lander, and helper with revolvers, ordered them into the shaft.
The night foreman was already below. When the mine employes finally came up, fifteen minutes later, the robbers had gone, and taken with them ten sacks of sylvanite ore, weighing sixty pounds each.
The sylvanite had been sorted just the day before by Manager Lornton. The total value of the ore was $5,000 or over $8 per pound.
The Orphan Belle was recently sold to a New York company for $375,000.

Orphan Bell Nos 1 & 2 Sold Yesterday to Trustee H. M. Blackmer
A BIG PRICE PAID.

———

A Trustee Sells to Another Trustee Twenty Acres of Ground.

The Orphan Bell and the Orphan Bell No. 2 were yesterday purchased by H. M. Blackmer, trustee, from A. L. Dickerman, trustee. The consideration on the deed that was placed on record would indicate by the government stamps, the payment of $210,500 for the property.

This deal closes a long pending trade, and gives good title to a supposedly valuable block of ground on Bull hill. The word supposedly is used for the reason that both claims have worked at a great loss for a long time, although there was a period when the Orphan Bell group was a heavy producer of high grade ore.

Orphan Bell Mining and Milling Company.—This company has filed suit in the District Court to have a transfer of certain property to the Arrow Gold Mining Company 18 months ago, set aside, claiming that there was a fraudulent conspiracy between former officers of the Orphan Bell Company and other parties to defraud and to profit by selling said property for a sum far less than its actual market value.

The sale was for $210,000, while the plaintiff claims the market value to have been $400,000.

Arrow G. M. Co. Deeds All Its Property to Orphan Bell M. & M. Co.
Arrow Gold Mining Company.—A statement issued by President Farnsworth, gives a review of the recent legal difficulties and explains the present financial condition. The company has been in litigation with the Orphan Bell Mining and Milling Company for about a year, but a compromise has been reached, by which the Orphan Bell Company paid $54,000, and other parties interested in this suit paid to the Arrow Gold Mining Company $4,750, making a total of $58,750.

By this arrangement, the Arrow Company deeds all its property to the Orphan Bell Mining and Milling Company, thus leaving it with no real estate. From the money received it is proposed to declare a 5c. dividend, leaving money enough to pay all the company's indebtedness.

The principal reasons for making the compromise with the Orphan Bell was the outlook for expensive litigation, which might last several years.

Empire State G. M. Co. Take Over Orphan G. M. Co. & Arrow G. M. Co. Properties
Empire State Gold Mining Company.—The property recently owned by the Orphan Gold and the Arrow Gold Mining Company, has been transferred to this company, and consists of the Ida Bell and the Ida Bell No. 1 lodes and the Orphan and Orphan No. 1 lodes, situated on Bull Hill, adjoining the Isabella.

This property originally belonged to the Orphan Bell Mining and Milling Company, and was sold some years ago to an eastern syndicate. Afterwards local men formed 2 companies, the Orphan Gold and the Arrow Gold Mining Company. For some time, litigation has been in progress in which the old Orphan Bell Company claimed the right to be allowed to buy back the property.

The Empire State Gold Mining Company was organized and the largest stockholders in the Orphan Bell Company furnished the money to buy back the property. Considerable work is now being done on the south end of the properties, and it is understood that the shaft will be sunk to 900 ft. It is understood that all Orphan Bell stockholders are privileged to get into the new company on the same basis as the larger stockholders who furnished the money.

As set forth in the letter, development on company account has been impossible "because of the advance in price of mining material and labor, occasioned by the "War."

The lease, it is understood, will be granted the new company for a five-year term, with the privilege of a three-year extension, and royalties on ore marketed will be on a sliding scale.

The ground included in the lease extends from the eleventh level of the Lee shaft to the bottom, or fifteenth, level, west from the west sideline of the Orphan No. 1 and includes the Orphan No. 2, Ida Bell No. 1 and 2, Emma No. 1, Comet and Jack Rabbit lodes No. 1 to 4 inclusive, X. J. Gold, Bully, and Tom Thumb lode claims.

It is proposed, according to the circular, to start work on the 15th level of the Lee shaft, taking advantage of a cross-cut 1000 ft. long and to continue the cross-cut 300 ft. to cut the Sump and Buena Vista veins.

The veins would then be cut at a depth of 450 ft. below the Buena Vista and Sump oreshoots that produced approximately three million dollars.

It is further proposed to continue the cross-cut some 200 ft. farther to explore the junction of the Buena Vista and Maloney veins, the No. 2 vein, No. 3 vein, and finally the Emma vein.

All of these veins have produced ore in the upper workings.

Subscriptions to the leasing company stock will be limited to 6000 shares of the par value of $1 each.

Isabella Leasing Co. Tries to Get Running
The old and well-known Isabella mine, during the active speculation that formerly prevailed in Cripple Creek stocks, was for years used as the basis for numerous stock-jobbing schemes.

Owing to the relative inactivity of this mine for some time past, a movement has been started by stockholders to interest a sufficient number of such stockholders in the proposed Isabella Leasing Co., to be capitalized at $25,000 with shares at one dollar par.

Capital derived from disposal of this stock will be devoted to development of new ground. Ore produced by the leasing company will be charged royalties ranging from 8% to 30%, depending upon grade of shipments.
