Ajax.—Since this company adopted the leasing system a short time ago a number of new ore bodies have been opened. More men are being worked than at any time in the past.
Seven shafts are being operated. The two latest finds made are the June Blizzard and Mammoth Pearl claims. On the former, Merrifield and Miller have encountered a high-grade streak of ore at a depth of eighty feet which is said to give returns of seven ounces to the ton. This streak was found in a vein varying from three to five feet in width.
Wilson & Co. have opened a cross vein on the Mammoth Pearl claim which varies from three to four feet in width and which is said to give returns of two ounces to the ton. This vein was opened at a depth of forty feet.
Since the completion of the drainage tunnel the water has been receding at a rate of four or five feet a month, and it is expected that the 1,200-foot level will soon be drained.
