graphic for visual presentation of text Returns are just at hand from the initial shipment sent out some days ago from the Tornado on Raven hill. The property is owned by ex-governor Cooper and Dr. Graham. It will be remembered that some three months ago operations on the Tornado were begun with a view to opening up the ore bodies supposed to cross the claim.
graphic for visual presentation of text Since then a shaft house has been put up, a plant of steam hoisting machinery set in operation, and the shaft sunk to 150 feet. Drifting on the vein at that depth, the ore body has been opened up and shipments begun. This first carload gave returns of $120 to the ton.

Tornado Happenings
THE TORNADO.

Dr. J. W. Graham, one of the principal owners of the Tornado and largely interested in the Raven and other good Cripple Creek properties is at the National. The doctor is giving most of his time to the Tornado at present and the shaft on the property is going down into the earth at a lively pace.

It is not likely any more drifts will be started until it will take a tape line 800 feet long to reach from the collar to the bottom of the shaft, where connections will be made with the Elkton level that is run up the hill at 500 feet and the heading of which at the Tornado line is in a big body of ore of an excellent grade.

graphic for visual presentation of text------
graphic for visual presentation of text Lessee George Bearnard and associates operating upon an underground block of Tornado territory last evening opened up one of the richest finds in the camp.
graphic for visual presentation of text In the breast of the 300-foot Elkton level which is now 50 feet into Tornado ground, a three-inch streak of almost solid sylvanite was disclosed with the last round of shots.
graphic for visual presentation of text The rock glistened like silver in the lights of the miners' candles. It was not necessary to sample the stuff, for bonanza values could be seen sticking out all over the surface.
graphic for visual presentation of text In addition to this streak there is a foot of high grade stuff which runs as well as could be wished. There is about 5 feet more on this level before the end of the block is reached and then the chute passes into the Tornado company's territory proper.
graphic for visual presentation of text However, the chute has not been worked on the other levels. Up to the time of making this find it yielded $6,000 a week.
graphic for visual presentation of text The chute is in the old Tornado vein, which gave the Elkton mine its famous Walter chute, and is as rich and in fact very similar in formation so that the Tornado may be another Elkton mine.

Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Co's Property Doing Well
Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company.—From all reports this property is looking very well. A strike was recently made in the Tornado property by some lessees. It should develop into a good thing. The lessees’ ground does not extend much below where the strike was made, so the company intends to work the continuation of the shoot. No work is done on the bottom level on account of the water, but work will be resumed in this level as soon as the drainage tunnel is completed.

Dynamite Accident at Tornado Mine
DYNAMITE EXPLOSION AT CRIPPLE CREEK.
graphic for visual presentation of text——————
graphic for visual presentation of text An explosion of powder occurred at the Tornado mine of the Elkton company, Cripple Creek, Colorado, in which several of the employes had a narrow escape from death. One hundred and fifty pounds of powder in the thawing room took fire from an excess of heat and began to burn up. It was discovered and warning given to seven men, who were in the shaft house.
graphic for visual presentation of text They ran to a nearby tunnel, and thus escaped before the explosion occurred. The powder in the main magazine, about thirty feet away, in some miraculous manner failed to explode under the awful concussion. The damage to the shaft will probably not amount to over $100.
