Elkton Vein/Ore-Shoot Description
In the Elkton at 25 feet depth the vein was 6 feet wide, consisting of a loose breccia of square blocks of rock. The first shipments from this loose stuff yielded 5 ounces of gold to the ton. The richest part of the vein was a sandy quartz stained with purple fluorite in which was considerable free gold. Course of vein, N. 2° W. Dip, 85° E. The Elkton shaft is vertical. At 300 feet the vein was intersected by cross-cuts. The pitch of the ore shoot is 75° to the north. Walls are perfect. Pay streak crossed from east to west wall. Where it crossed the dyke it assayed $80.40 per ton. The dyke itself seemed poor in value. The pay streak is an altered part of the dyke the rock replaced by quartz, iron oxides, fluorite, etc. Surface alteration extended to a depth of 170 feet The ore at that depth is porous quartz stained with fluorite.

In the adjacent Walter, the dyke after leaving the Katherine passes through the Walter uniting with the Raven-Elkton dyke. In this hill the vein and dykes split as they travel north up hill. South there is only one well defined vein or dyke, whilst north the one dyke becomes two dykes on the Elkton claim and later numerous veins appear as they do in a similar way on Battle Mt. There on the south end of south slope the Independence and Stin are the only well known main veins, while on the north end of the south slope are a dozen veins. So on Gold Hill on south end of south slope the Anaconda is the only vein, while on the north end of south slope and on the apex are many well known veins producing ore. Similar conditions occur on Bull Hill. It was the trunk first, the branches next.

FIG. 2. LONGITUDINAL SECTION OF THE WALTER MINE.

One of the Katherine ore-shoots pitches into the Walter at an angle of 45°. The same shoot also occurs in Elkton level No. 2. It is 30 feet long followed by a barren piece of 80 feet and then the main ore-shoot comes in from the south pitching 70 feet toward the north and continues north 600 feet. This long shoot is not rich but contains rich pockets. Average width is 4 feet. Two per cent. runs 2,5 ounces gold. The pay streak in this is a greenish quartz in the center of the vein associated with free gold. Soft ground patches are generally favorable for ore. A rich ore-shoot sampled 20 ounces of gold per ton for 12 inches wide and 30 feet in length. The pay streak was on east side, in the 3d level in the Elkton. In the Walter ground a new ore-shoot was found 25 feet long and 6 feet wide of a lenticular form. It was enclosed in breccia. The ore was a telluride scattered through small seams.

The vein material was full of small vughs and cavities. Three carloads of ore were taken from this pocket, yielding 3 ounces gold per ton without sorting. This shoot was only encountered at a depth of 520 feet, showing that all ore-shoots do not come to the surface. There are many shoots whose apices are found at from 80 to 500 feet below surface.

Flag-Raising at Elkton
FLAG-RAISING AT ELKTON.

Elkton was ablaze with patriotism yesterday, the occasion being the presentation of a flag pole and a beautiful star spangled banner to the Elkton school by the miners of the Elkton mine. It was a great surprise to Prof. North and assistants, and the entire school.

Another flag was unfurled from the shaft house of the Elkton mine.

Appie-Ellen Strike is Proving Big
The Appie-Ellen strike of the Elkton is proving bigger than ever. Work is being pushed and the drift is not yet through the ore body, which is now 40 feet wide, according to reliable news from camp. The values are getting better than ever, and the strike is proving an immense thing.

President George Bernard could not be seen in regard to the greatly improved conditions. It is stated that the ore is being broken and prepared for shipment without sorting. The values are better than $50 to the ton.

Elkton Mine Improvements
Elkton Improvements.

A building having a floor measurement of 28x36 feet is being built near the office and will be occupied by the assayers and one of the most thorough assaying equipments in the district. The engine house to cover the new hoist will be completed within a few days.

All these improvements and equipments, including the ore house, built several months ago, will bring the total expenditure for exterior work up to $60,000, and the end is not yet.

The next addition is a compressor. It will be capable of driving twenty-five or thirty machine drills and five months will be occupied in its construction.

Elkton Mine Said to be Sold
The Elkton Mine Said to be Sold.

Colorado Springs, Colo., No. 4.—The control of the Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining company has passed into the hands of eastern capitalists for a consideration based on a valuation of $6,875,000 for the entire capitalization.

The names of the buyers are withheld for the present by E. M. Delavergne, their local agent, himself a prominent stockholder. The deal is perhaps the largest involving Colorado mining property since Stratton's Independence was sold in April, 1899, for $10,000.000.

In local mining circles it is thought that the purchasers are New York capitalists who represent Wernheiner, Beit & Co., of London, who have sought to buy the mine.

Elkton Dump Lease
The Elkton company has granted a lease on the Elkton dump to Lyon & Strickland of Cripple Creek. The lessees are required to remove all the waste rock from the territory of the Elkton company.

The lessees are making arrangements with the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad Company to build a spur so they can handle the waste as well as the ore. Many times in the past, mining men have tried to secure a lease on this dump, but all were unsuccessful.

It is understood the lessees will also lease the Arequa mill, which is now idle and treat the best of the dump. It is a very short haul from the dump to this plant. It is thought the dump must contain considerable good ore, as otherwise the lessees would not agree to haul the great amount of waste.

Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company
Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company—A circular to the stockholders shows the company's affairs of the company to be in fairly good shape. The circular states that when the present management took hold about July 15, 1902, the pumps were handling about 2,700 gals, of water per minute, whereas they were only built to handle 2,000 per minute.

The mine was run at a loss of $74,980 from January 1, 1902. to July 1, 1902, and at the latter time there was but little ore in sight, a number of unpaid bills and only about $3,000 in the treasury. The new management imediately cut operating expenses to about one-fifth, and got greater efficiency in all departments.

After a careful study it was decided that about $400,000 would be needed to unwater the 8th and 9th levels, and this work was abandoned. Within the last few months a large amount of work has been done, and since September the mine has paid expenses. At present the company is about $20,000 in debt. A number of new ore bodies have been opened up and much new ground prospected.

E. M. De La Vergne is manager, and Mr. Sherwood is chairman of the executive committee.

Elkton closed due the Strike Situation
The situation is somewhat improved, but not yet settled. A number of concessions have been made by both sides. At present it seems as though the strike at the Standard mill would be settled, as all the demands of the union men at the mill have been met with, except as to the reinstatement of some of the striking mill men. If the trouble is not settled very soon a number of mines will have to close from having no marked for their ore.

At present the Elkton mine is shut down due to the strike.

Denver, Dec. 16.—A Republican special from Cripple Creek last night says:

All troops which have been stationed at the Elkton mine were withdrawn to-day by order of Colonel Verdeckberg, the commander of the National Guard in this district. It is believed by the military commander and his advisers that the conditions no longer require military protection. The non-union men working can fully protect themselves and have so declared themselves.

The move is a significant one, indicating the confidence the military authorities have in the situation.

Cripple Creek Drainage Tunnel Water Flow
The measurements for December by Engineer Jacquith shows that the water was lowered 10,5 ft. during the month, making the water level 8,998 ft. above sea-level. When the water was tapped it was standing at 9.026 ft., or 15 ft. below the standard tunnel level.

At the rate the water is receding, the Elkton Co. will begin work on the eighth level about May 1. The flow through the tunnel is about 5,200 gal. per minute.

The total output of ore from all the Elkton properties for December was 4,700 tons.

By June 1 the Elkton management at Cripple Creek expects to be able to get into the lower levels and begin mining there. There is only about 10 feet of water in the mine at present, the El Paso tunnel having unwatered it to this depth. The water is receding at the rate of 2 feet per week.

The Elkton is making weekly shipments of fair grade of ore, but as soon as the miners can get into the lower workings the output will be increased and the values will also increase

Elkton Consolidated Mining & Milling Co. News
A leasing company similar to the Isabella Leasing company, which was recently incorporated, is being contemplated by stockholders of the Elkton Consolidated Mining & Milling Co.

It is understood that the board of directors has been sounded as to the possibility of securing a lease that will ensure development of the Raven Hill estate at depth.

Connection will shortly be completed by cross-cut between the Moffat tunnel and the Blue Flag workings. On account of the Blue Flag adjoining the Ida May group of the Elkton company on the north, its development from that direction is impossible.

The movement is reported to meet with the approval of many of the stockholdere and a special meeting may be called to arrange for the organization of a leasing company.

No work is now being done on the estate, except by lessees who are making fair production from the leased territory south of the shaft.
