Elkton Mine Info
A party of members of the Colorado Scientific Society attending the 127th Regular Meeting held at the Masonic Hall in Cripple Creek July 1st, 1895, visited on the 2nd of July the Elkton Mine.
On the 200-foot level this property was opened up by drifts for a total length of 400 feet. A cross-cut on the 100-foot level east, reached a dike of nepheline basalt running parallel to the vein.

Elkton Vein/Ore-Shoot Description
In the Elkton at 25 feet depth the vein was 6 feet wide, consisting of a loose breccia of square blocks of rock. The first shipments from this loose stuff yielded 5 ounces of gold to the ton. The richest part of the vein was a sandy quartz stained with purple fluorite in which was considerable free gold. Course of vein, N. 2° W. Dip, 85° E. The Elkton shaft is vertical. At 300 feet the vein was intersected by cross-cuts. The pitch of the ore shoot is 75° to the north. Walls are perfect. Pay streak crossed from east to west wall. Where it crossed the dyke it assayed $80.40 per ton. The dyke itself seemed poor in value. The pay streak is an altered part of the dyke the rock replaced by quartz, iron oxides, fluorite, etc. Surface alteration extended to a depth of 170 feet The ore at that depth is porous quartz stained with fluorite.
In the adjacent Walter, the dyke after leaving the Katherine passes through the Walter uniting with the Raven-Elkton dyke. In this hill the vein and dykes split as they travel north up hill. South there is only one well defined vein or dyke, whilst north the one dyke becomes two dykes on the Elkton claim and later numerous veins appear as they do in a similar way on Battle Mt. There on the south end of south slope the Independence and Stin are the only well known main veins, while on the north end of the south slope are a dozen veins. So on Gold Hill on south end of south slope the Anaconda is the only vein, while on the north end of south slope and on the apex are many well known veins producing ore. Similar conditions occur on Bull Hill. It was the trunk first, the branches next.
FIG. 2. LONGITUDINAL SECTION OF THE WALTER MINE.
One of the Katherine ore-shoots pitches into the Walter at an angle of 45°. The same shoot also occurs in Elkton level No. 2. It is 30 feet long followed by a barren piece of 80 feet and then the main ore-shoot comes in from the south pitching 70 feet toward the north and continues north 600 feet. This long shoot is not rich but contains rich pockets. Average width is 4 feet. Two per cent. runs 2,5 ounces gold. The pay streak in this is a greenish quartz in the center of the vein associated with free gold. Soft ground patches are generally favorable for ore. A rich ore-shoot sampled 20 ounces of gold per ton for 12 inches wide and 30 feet in length. The pay streak was on east side, in the 3d level in the Elkton. In the Walter ground a new ore-shoot was found 25 feet long and 6 feet wide of a lenticular form. It was enclosed in breccia. The ore was a telluride scattered through small seams.
The vein material was full of small vughs and cavities. Three carloads of ore were taken from this pocket, yielding 3 ounces gold per ton without sorting. This shoot was only encountered at a depth of 520 feet, showing that all ore-shoots do not come to the surface. There are many shoots whose apices are found at from 80 to 500 feet below surface.

Elkton Consolidated Mining & Milling Co. Inquiry
Elkton Con. Min. & Mill. Co.
3227. (Attleboro, Mass.) Will you please report on the Elkton Consolidated Mining & Milling Co., of Cripple Creek? Why does the stock sell at such a low figure (80c.), at this date, when it has steadily paid 2 per cent monthly, with occasionally an extra 1 per cent?
Is the company earning the dividend, and are they likely to continue at this rate? Would you advise its purchase for investment at this time and price?
Ans. We are advised that for over two months' past, development work has been going on at the mine, mainly in sinking a new shaft, so that the usual production has been lessened, and that as a measure of precaution, the directors have not seen fit to continue the extra dividend of one per cent. The decline that recently occurred, was, therefore, quite warranted.
The present price, however, is about 87c., representing a recovery of over 7c. per share from the lowest point, and indicating the excellent feeling that exists in the public mind in regard to this property. As compared with any other mining stock, Elkton Consolidated is considered a very fair proposition at present quotation.
The company is the owner of three patented claims, situated on the southern slope of Raven hill, Cripple Creek, Colo., comprising a total of 17 acres. The famous Elkton vein traverses this property for a distance of 1,600 feet, and has been opened up for almost its entire length.
The development consists of a main double compartment shaft , sunk to a depth of 400 feet, together with drifts and levels, aggregating over 8,000 feet in length. Three levels have been run practically the entire length of the property, and the fourth, for a distance of about 850 feet.
At the fourth, or 400-foot level, an extensive pumping plant has been installed. The shaft is equipped with adequate hoisting facilities, and the mine is furnished with an electric light plant, together with air compressors and drills.
Previous to February, 1896, the Elkton Company had been engaged in securing its property, and prosecuting development, and thereby had incurred an indebtedness of $9,000. During the succeeding three months, the company was enabled to pay off this indebtedness, together with a further sum of $7,384 to the stockholders of the Walter, in accordance with the terms of a consolidation, previously effected; and in addition, to begin in the month of May, 1896, the payment of dividends, amounting to $10,000 monthly, or one cent per share.
This dividend rate was maintained until November, 1896, when the rate was doubled. From September to November, 1897, inclusive, extra monthly dividends of one cent were declared. The total dividends paid to November 30, 1897, aggregate $416,960.57. The gross production from September 1, 1895, to November 30, 1897, amounts to $1,039,141.46.

The figures in the column headed "net" show the net smelter returns for the several months, which are obtained by deducting from the gross production of the mines the expense of freight and treatment charges. In previous reports several of these monthly amounts were estimated, but the above figures have been taken directly from the books of the company.
The surplus on Dec. 18, 1897, including cash and United State bonds, was $202,650.50, to which should be added $10,000, being the estimated amount of ore unsettled for by smelters, making the total $212,650.50. Preparations are being made to sink the main shaft an additional 200 feet.
It is proposed to make it a three-compartment from the fourth level down, in order that the regular mining operations may be interfered with as little as possible during the sinking. The Elkton Company is capitalized for 1,250,000 shares of a par value of $1 each.
Of these shares, 250,000 remain in the treasury.

Elkton was ablaze with patriotism yesterday, the occasion being the presentation of a flag pole and a beautiful star spangled banner to the Elkton school by the miners of the Elkton mine. It was a great surprise to Prof. North and assistants, and the entire school.
Another flag was unfurled from the shaft house of the Elkton mine.

Elkton Gold Mining Co. Inquiry
Elkton Gold Mining Co.
3408. (Belfast, Me.) Will you kindly give me what information you can of the Elkton Gold Mining Company, of Cripple Creek.
Ans.: There is no such company now as the Elkton Gold Mining Company. There was at one time, but it became merged into the Elkton Consolidated Mining & Milling Company, with a capitalization of 1,250,000 shares, of a par value of $1 per share; 250,000 shares are in the treasury, and there is about $118,000 cash also in the treasury.
The company owns the Elkton, Kentucky Bill and Walter Lodes on Raven Hill, in the Cripple Creek district, comprising 23 acres.
The stock has lately sold down as low as 51½ cents per share. It has been paying dividends of two cents per share monthly with great regularity for some time past, and has occasionally paid a one cent per share extra dividend.
The following are the officers:
George Bernard, Colorado Springs, Colo., president;
W. S. Jackson, Colorado Springs, vice-president;
J. H. Avery, Colorado Springs, secretary and treasurer.
The main shaft is on the Kentucky Bill, 395 feet deep with 20 feet sump. There are four levels, aggregating over 1,100 feet of drifts. There is a full equipment of expensive and efficient hoisting and pumping machinery.
This property is locally regarded as one of the leading mines of Cripple Creek, and has paid a large amount in dividends, including $270,000 during 1897. Better ore is now being taken from the Elkton, at the lower or 400-foot level than has ever been found at any point in the workings.
During the month of March the output was approximately 1,200 tons, and it is expected that the production for April will show a gratifying increase over that figure. The lower workings are encountering considerable water.
At the last regular monthly meeting of the company, a dividend of two cents per share was made payable April 20. When this dividend shall have been paid, the company will have distributed a total of $516,960.57 among its stockholders.

President George Bernard could not be seen in regard to the greatly improved conditions. It is stated that the ore is being broken and prepared for shipment without sorting. The values are better than $50 to the ton.

Elkton Improvements.
A building having a floor measurement of 28x36 feet is being built near the office and will be occupied by the assayers and one of the most thorough assaying equipments in the district. The engine house to cover the new hoist will be completed within a few days.
All these improvements and equipments, including the ore house, built several months ago, will bring the total expenditure for exterior work up to $60,000, and the end is not yet.
The next addition is a compressor. It will be capable of driving twenty-five or thirty machine drills and five months will be occupied in its construction.

The Elkton Mine Said to be Sold.
Colorado Springs, Colo., No. 4.—The control of the Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining company has passed into the hands of eastern capitalists for a consideration based on a valuation of $6,875,000 for the entire capitalization.
The names of the buyers are withheld for the present by E. M. Delavergne, their local agent, himself a prominent stockholder. The deal is perhaps the largest involving Colorado mining property since Stratton's Independence was sold in April, 1899, for $10,000.000.
In local mining circles it is thought that the purchasers are New York capitalists who represent Wernheiner, Beit & Co., of London, who have sought to buy the mine.

Elkton Dump Lease
The Elkton company has granted a lease on the Elkton dump to Lyon & Strickland of Cripple Creek. The lessees are required to remove all the waste rock from the territory of the Elkton company.
The lessees are making arrangements with the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad Company to build a spur so they can handle the waste as well as the ore. Many times in the past, mining men have tried to secure a lease on this dump, but all were unsuccessful.
It is understood the lessees will also lease the Arequa mill, which is now idle and treat the best of the dump. It is a very short haul from the dump to this plant. It is thought the dump must contain considerable good ore, as otherwise the lessees would not agree to haul the great amount of waste.

Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company
Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company—A circular to the stockholders shows the company's affairs of the company to be in fairly good shape. The circular states that when the present management took hold about July 15, 1902, the pumps were handling about 2,700 gals, of water per minute, whereas they were only built to handle 2,000 per minute.
The mine was run at a loss of $74,980 from January 1, 1902. to July 1, 1902, and at the latter time there was but little ore in sight, a number of unpaid bills and only about $3,000 in the treasury. The new management imediately cut operating expenses to about one-fifth, and got greater efficiency in all departments.
After a careful study it was decided that about $400,000 would be needed to unwater the 8th and 9th levels, and this work was abandoned. Within the last few months a large amount of work has been done, and since September the mine has paid expenses. At present the company is about $20,000 in debt. A number of new ore bodies have been opened up and much new ground prospected.
E. M. De La Vergne is manager, and Mr. Sherwood is chairman of the executive committee.

Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Co's Property Doing Well
Elkton Consolidated Gold Mining Company.—From all reports this property is looking very well. A strike was recently made in the Tornado property by some lessees. It should develop into a good thing. The lessees’ ground does not extend much below where the strike was made, so the company intends to work the continuation of the shoot. No work is done on the bottom level on account of the water, but work will be resumed in this level as soon as the drainage tunnel is completed.

El Paso Drainage Tunnel Expected to Impact Elkton Soon
One of the many instances of what the drainage tunnel may do for the Cripple Creek district is afforded in an examination of the conditions in the property of the Elkton company. In this property, aside from shoots of ordinary size and value, there stands one great bank of ore that rivals in width some of the largest deposits in the district. The ore body is approximately 100 feet wide and 200 feet long, but its bulk lies below the present water level so that its extraction cannot begin until the effect of the drainage tunnel is felt. Its value however, has been frequently tested and in a general way, it would sell for $20 in gold to the ton. It is now believed that the drainage tunnel will be completed in thirty days from date.

Elkton Gains From the El Paso Tunnel
Water is steadily subsiding in the several properties of the Cripple Creek district where it was early assumed that effects would first be felt. Reports of substantial gains continue to come from the Elkton mine, one of the chief indicators at this time of the falling level.
Up to last Sunday there had been a fall of about one foot for the week at the Elkton, which is the general average each week for this property. This makes the total fall at this time approximately four feet.

The non-union men working can fully protect themselves and have so declared themselves.
The move is a significant one, indicating the confidence the military authorities have in the situation.

From the El Paso drainage tunnel according to measurements just taken, there is being discharged 6,870 gallons of water per minute, which is 200 gallons per minute more than the measurements taken a week ago, and is the greatest amount since the tunnel was opened up.
At the present time 50 feet of water has been drained from the Elkton, Mary McKinley and other mines. Measurements taken in the first two mines named show that the water is lowering at the rate of about ten feet per month, and it will not be long until these two companies will be able to get into their lower workings and mine the exceptionally rich ore which is known to exist there.

Colorado Springs, Aug. 19. The Elkton Company is now in shape to commence shipment on company account. The new machinery has been installed and is ready to handle the ore as soon as hoisted.
During the progress of extending the eighth level northward, another high grade ore body has been encountered in the old Walker vein. The new ore shoot measures between five and six feet in width and from two to five inches on the side of the vein is high grade ore running in the neighborhood of $800 per ton.
In the eighth level the company has several thousand tons of smelting grade ore broken which has not been touched yet, but on the tenth they expect to commence hoisting this pile of rock and send it for treatment, which means in all probability the resumption of dividends for the Elkton stockholders.

Elkton High Grade Strike at Level 5
Cripple Creek.—The strike recently made in the fifth level of the Elkton, on Raven hill, promises to become one of the greatest rinds in the district. The vein carrying the rich ore is located 75 feet west of the main shaft, and as development work continues it increases in width. All the way across it gives returns of $35 to the ton, while small knifeblade seams carry values as high as $400 and $500.
The Elkton is crosscutting now for an extension of the vein in the fourth level, and it is expected to expose the ore body proper with any round of shots.

Ore Washing at Elkton Mine
On pages 102-103 in the February 18, 1905 issue of Mining and Scientific Press (Vol. XC) there appears an article about 'Ore Washing at Cripple Creek'. Descriptions of several ore-washing plants at Cripple Creek, Colo., are given. The values in the ore are usually associated with the soft material, while the hard rock of the vein is almost destitute of value.
The system of washing at the Elkton mine, which may be taken as an example of the practices, is as follows:
- Ore from mine. To ore house, to (2).
- Grizzly, wire screen 1 in. holes. Oversize to (4); undersize to (3).
- Bins. To elevator to (13).
- Bins. Through chute sprayed with water to (5).
- Sorting table 8 ft. long, men picking. Waste thrown in cars trammed to dump; ore to (6).
- Blake breaker. Product by elevator to (7).
- Revolving screen; 40 in. x 12 ft.; perforations ⅞ in. at entrance, 1⅛ at middle and 1⅜ at discharge end; 8 to 12 r.p.m. Undersize to bin, to (13); oversize to (8).
- Screen drum with a spiral screw, half under water. Slimes to (9); washed ore to (10).
- To settling tank, drawn off, dried, sacked and shipped.
- Picking belt with men picking ore from waste. Waste to (11); ore to (12).
- Hopper to cars to dump.
- Bins to breaker. Product crushed to 1 in. To (13).
- Automatic samplers. Sample assayed; rejected ore to loading bins, to smelter.
Most of the ore of this district costs about $10 to $15 per ton by the time it is ready for the mill or smelter.

Elkton Mine Stuff in 1908
The Elkton mine is producing about 2000 tons per month of good-grade ore, probably an average of $25 per ton. I consider the Elkton one of the best properties in the Cripple Creek district, with possibilities of a long life. Large bodies of ore of grade better than an ounce exist at the lower levels.
At 900 ft. (just about water-level) an excellent showing is being developed, and with the completion of the drainage adit large bodies of high-grade ore will be exposed that have been covered during the last few years since pumping operations on the lower levels ceased.
A large tonnage of good-grade ore will undoubtedly be shipped from this property for many years.

Elkton Mine and Its Water Issues
The history of the water in the Elkton shows that the water is confined to fissures and does not belong to a general underground body. At Arequa, for example, is a spring that has not been affected by the workings of the Elkton, close to it.
For practical purposes the underground water is to be regarded as occupying a number of separate basins. The Elkton mine was one of those most troubled by water. The first water was on level No. 3, or 9,423 ft. above sea level; the flow ranged from 400 gal. to 600 gal. per minute, but after a few months this ran dry, probably drained by the Ophelia tunnel.
Successively larger flows were met with at greater depths on levels Nos. 5 and 6, drained by the Standard tunnel. Drifting was resumed and the mine was made dry until February, 1901, when on level No. 7 a large cavity was tapped which drowned the pumps at level No. 8 and rose to 45 ft. above level No. 7.
The levels were recovered by pumping and bulkheading the source. On Sept. 6, 1903, the El Paso tunnel was completed to the El Paso mine, and the first rush of accumulated water soon subsided to the normal flow. A few days after the El Paso tunnel cut into the great water course that raised the flow from 2,000 gal. to 5,000 gal. per minute, and the water fell rapidly in the Elkton, showing that the rate of fall of the Elkton water is limited by the flowing capacity of the natural fissure which afforded the first great flow in the mine.
The El Paso tunnel lowered the water in the Mary McKinney and Elkton, showing a connection to open fissures between Beacon hill phonolite and the main volcanic neck. The volcanic neck of breccia contains a body of water prevented from escaping by the impervious nature of the old crystalline rocks with which it is surrounded. It is like a water-soaked sponge in a glass cup. The behavior, character and temperature of the underground water indicate a meteoric origin from rain and snow falling on the district.

Deep Drainage Tunnel Effects
Denver, Dec. 5—Computation by a competent engineer shows that it would cost 6½ times more to drain the Cripple Creek district to the present depth of the deep-drainage tunnel by pumping than by the tunnel.
This will convey an idea of the benefits to be derived from this great work, which has just been completed through the dry, hard granite "rim," or surrounding country rock, into the more porous and spongy volcanic breccia area, which contains the gold-bearing veins, and also the vast amount of water which it is desired to liberate, and which is expected to unwater the mines an average of 730 ft. below their present lowest workings.
One big mine, the El Paso, has already been unwatered, and it is stated today that in all mines on Beacon hill, the Mary McKinney and Elkton especially, the water has lowered 5 ft. or more, though the mines at the extreme east of the camp have not yet shown any lowering.
The drainage will, of course, be slow, as may be gathered from the fact that in September, 1904, according to careful records kept by the engineer of the Cripple Creek drainage tunnel (the next one above the Roosevelt, or deep drainage), the amount of water drained to lower one vertical foot in the principal shafts in the district was 58,109,000 gal., and that the removal of 4115 gal. per min. only lowered the water level in the central and western groups of mines at the rate of 4 ft. per month.

It is understood that the board of directors has been sounded as to the possibility of securing a lease that will ensure development of the Raven Hill estate at depth.
Connection will shortly be completed by cross-cut between the Moffat tunnel and the Blue Flag workings. On account of the Blue Flag adjoining the Ida May group of the Elkton company on the north, its development from that direction is impossible.
The movement is reported to meet with the approval of many of the stockholdere and a special meeting may be called to arrange for the organization of a leasing company.
No work is now being done on the estate, except by lessees who are making fair production from the leased territory south of the shaft.
