Cresson Aerial Tramway Up the Hill Underway
Tramway for the Cresson.
Work is well advanced on the aerial tramway being constructed from the Cresson mine of the Bull Hill Mining & Development Co. to the broad-gauge tracks some 400 yards above the mine on Bull hill. Delay and extra expense in hauling caused by heavy roads during bad weather convinced the management that a tramway whereby the ore could be transported direct into freight-cars would soon pay for itself, and save the company money.
The output of the Cresson mine is in the neighborhood of 2,000 tons per month, averaging $20 in gold.

Cresson Delivers Ore by Aerial Tram
Denver—The Cresson Consolidated, a close corporation of Chicago men, has a mine from which last year 32,000 tons averaging $20 was shipped, and as the mine is worked with filled stopes, only a small portion of the ore developed went out.
The cost of mining here is low since the shaft is less than 1000 ft. deep, the equipment simple, and the ground nearly dry. Ore containing 5 oz. gold per ton is now being shipped. The property, by the way, is one of the few that delivers ore by means of an aerial tram.
These are beginning to be built in this district, which has previously depended entirely on wagon and rail for transportation.

Deep development is the order for the Cresson Consolidated company's Raven Hill estate, and they will resume sinking in the main shaft on or about February 1.
The Cresson main shaft situated on the central block of the Mary L. and Draper claims, has been sunk 1,000 feet, and is to be continued to the 1,200-foot point, a depth corresponding with the 900-foot level of the Elkton Consolidated company's main shaft, and to the known water level of this immediate section.
Should conditions permit the shaft will be continued deeper until water prevents further work. The property continues heavy production, and the January output will be between 2,500 and 3,000 tons of about one-ounce grade.

At a depth of 1,274 ft. in the Cresson mine, it is said the main ore body has been found to be richer and larger than in the upper levels.

Cresson Mine Discovery
Cripple Creek.—Renewed interest is being taken in Cripple Creek, Colorado, owing to the discovery, in the Cresson mine, at a depth of 1200 ft., of a chamber or vug yielding 200 tons of ore and reported to have been worth $500,000, which has led to an important revival of prospecting.
The Cresson is about half a mile northeast of Elkton and at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The company was incorporated in 1895 for $1,000,000, but down to 350 ft. no important orebodies were found.
Below 600 ft. the ore-shoots were better defined, and under the active management of Richard Roelofs the property has done well for several years past.
In 1913, for example, 51,696 tons worth $800,768 was shipped, the total mining cost being $3.61 per ton, to which was added $4.90 to cover freight and treatment.
In 1914 shipments ranged from 3300 to 5300 tons per month, and the value of the ore from $18 to $28.
According to H. B. Patton and H. J. Wolf of the Colorado School of Mines, there are two ore-shoots in the mine, lying on opposite boundaries of a cracked and fissured elliptical area in the characteristic breccia of the district and near an intruded mass of latite-phonolite.
The fissured area measures 1000 by 500 ft. The northwestern ore-shoot measures 35 by 250 ft. in cross-section and the southeastern 150 by 500 ft. These are essentially two pipes. The chamber in which the rich ore was found was pear-shaped, 23 ft. long, 13ift. wide, and 40 ft. high. Around the loose fragments of rock partly filling the chamber, lining the walls, and in fissures extending from it, was a whitish cement consisting largely of celestite, and it was here that the bonanza was encountered.
The extension of the ore shoot on the 13th level has now been found.
Naturally this find has stimulated prospecting throughout the district and the influx of explorers is considerable.

Cresson in Ore
A large body of ore has been entered in virgin ground at the 800-ft. level of the Cresson mine. A preliminary estimate gives a great value for the shoot. Mine samples have averaged $30 per ton as broken.
The ore is believed to be the upward extension of the rich body opened at 1300 ft. two years ago, and later opened at 1000 ft. The management has planned a campaign of exploration of the area hitherto untouched.

one, known as 812, has been developed a length of 55 ft., showing a width of 22 ft., with grab-samples averaging $29.60 per ton.
The new orebody at the 11th level, while not fully developed, promises to be substantial, with grab-samples assaying $54.70 per ton.
The ore shipped from the mine in February netted $90,002.

Ore-reserves of the Cresson are estimated by Charles Noble, consulting engineer, at $1,934,158. Cash in bank is $219,000, with ore in transit and at the mill with an estimated value of $70,000 exclusive of December shipments.
The report of A. L. Bloomfield, general manager, shows that during the past fiscal year 19 diamond-drill holes totalling 3667 ft. were drilled. Good ore was disclosed which, according to the general manager, "may result in the discovery of a continuation of the ore" under stope 1203.

Cresson in Rich Ore
Persistence of rich ore at great depth in the mines of the Cripple Creek district is evidenced by developments in progress at the Portland, Vindicator, and Cresson mines.
The Cresson ore is being broken with machine-drills in stopes from 126 ft. to 150 ft. wide. This is in virgin territory, north, between the 1100- and 1200-ft. levels. This huge orebody is making 90% ore with but the coarsest sorting; the average assays are from $12 to $15 per ton.
Many cars have returned one ounce gold per ton.

Cresson with Important Development
The most important development at the Cresson mine since the discovery of the rich 'vug' in 1913 has been made in the north-western area of the Cresson estate beyond the crater at the 1700-ft.. or Roosevelt tunnel, level.
The ore-shoot as now developed on this level is better than 130 ft. long, with a width averaging 25 ft. over its entire length. The ore, shipped as broken, is returning between $20 and $40 per ton. The same shoot has also been opened up at the 1600-ft. level and as the ground above is virgin, it may carry through to surface.
On the 1600-ft. level stoping has been commenced with the orebody holding its strength as in the deeper working. The shoot was originally found by diamond-drilling.
The greatest value of the discovery is that it strengthens the prospect for other important discoveries in the same undeveloped area.
The Cresson is shipping eight to ten cars of 30 to 35 tons capacity daily.
