Samplers at Present Operating
The bulk of the ore previous to shipment to the valley mills is sampled, and its value determined, in one of the three modern samplers at present operating in the district.
The Taylor and Brunton, the Cripple Creek Sampling and Ore Company, and the Eagle Ore Company, the three present samplers, have all been recently built.
Brunton and Vezin machines are used, the ore being crushed and rough rolled generally to 1 in. and finer before cutting out the sample.
Smaller rolls and small gyratory crushers or grinders are used successively in reducing the sample for assay purposes. The district is studded with several more or less antiquated samplers which have been unable to compete with the better methods and arrangements now in use.

Cripple Creek District Up to Date; Snapshot Samplers Nov. 2, 1904
Colorado Springs, Nov. 2. Daily shipments are being maintained from the district at such a rate as was never before known in the history of the camp. The month of October is going to crowd the banner month of September with a nearly 25 per cent. increase.
As an illustration, the following table shows the ore received to-day by the different samplers of the district:
Sampler |
Tonnage |
Taylor & BrantonBrunton |
600 tons |
Eagle Sampler |
300 tons |
Rio Grande |
275 tons |
Cripple Creek |
250 tons |
|
|
Making a total of 1425 tons for the day. |
The above, with that sent direct to the smelters, would reach the figures easily of over 2000 tons per day.
At the present time there are more men working in the district than at any time in the history of the camp, and more ore with a better valuation is being sent out every day.

Taylor & Brunton Sampler on Victor Pass Details
The Taylor & Brunton Sampler.
The Taylor & Brunton Company have two samplers in operation in the district. The below is the scheme of operations as practiced at the newer works.
This plant is the latest one erected in the district and has been in operation about two years. The method as practiced at the older plant is not given, and differs from the above more in the matter of the handling of the ore than in the process of sampling.
The automatic sampler employed is what is known as the Brunton sampler.
It will be noticed that four samples, each taking out one-fifth, are employed, so that part going to the sampling room is only one six hundred and twenty-fifth of the original. After mixing on the floor the sample is reduced by split shovel to about two shovelsful and then proceeded with as in the case of the other mills described above.

Tidbits Linked to Ore Sampling
On page 314 in the March 27, 1902 (Volume XLV) issue of the Mining Reporter appears an article about the 'New Brunton Sampler'. This is one of the few machines which take a correct sample.
At the sampling works at Victor, Colo., the ore is crushed by a Blake breaker, set at from 1.5 to 2 in., and thence goes to sampler No. 1;
this sample goes to a set of rolls 36x14 in., and thence to sampler No. 2;
the sample is again crushed by 27x14 in. rolls, set to crush to 0.25 in., and thence to sampler No. 3;
the sample is mixed, dried thoroughly and sent to 20x10 in. rolls, which crush to 0.0625 (1/16) in., and thence passes to sampler No. 4;
each sampler takes out a sample of 20% of the ore, so that the final sample is equal to 0.2x0.2x0.2x0.2=0.0016 (1/625) part of the whole quantity sampled.

Commander Removes Troops
Denver, Dec. 16.—A Republican special from Cripple Creek last night says:
All troops which have been stationed at the Taylor & Brunton samplers were withdrawn to-day by order of Colonel Verdeckberg, the commander of the National Guard in this district. It is believed by the military commander and his advisers that the conditions no longer require military protection. The non-union men working can fully protect themselves and have so declared themselves.
The move is a significant one, indicating the confidence the military authorities have in the situation.
