1902 Development in Ajax
The year of 1902 just ended, has been the most important one in the history of Cripple Creek, from the standpoint of development. Never before have there been seen such strong indications of the permanency of ore shoots with depth. The Ajax was undergoing the blocking out system and is still blocking out.

El Paso Drainage Tunnel Working as Wanted
A large number of mining properties in the Cripple Creek district are feeling the result of the opening of the drainage tunnel by a very noticeable decrease in their water lines.
The water in the Elkton and Mary McKinney properties is receding at the rate of five feet per month.
The water level in the American Eagle and Ajax properties on Battle mountain is also being lowered at about the same rate.
Nearly every property in the western section of the camp is feeling the beneficial effect of the drainage tunnel, while the mines on Beacon hill have been drained entirely.

Ajax Happenings
Ajax.—Since this company adopted the leasing system a short time ago a number of new ore bodies have been opened. More men are being worked than at any time in the past.
Seven shafts are being operated. The two latest finds made are the June Blizzard and Mammoth Pearl claims. On the former, Merrifield and Miller have encountered a high-grade streak of ore at a depth of eighty feet which is said to give returns of seven ounces to the ton. This streak was found in a vein varying from three to five feet in width.
Wilson & Co. have opened a cross vein on the Mammoth Pearl claim which varies from three to four feet in width and which is said to give returns of two ounces to the ton. This vein was opened at a depth of forty feet.
Since the completion of the drainage tunnel the water has been receding at a rate of four or five feet a month, and it is expected that the 1,200-foot level will soon be drained.

Battle Mountain Pumping Rumors
Pumping on Battle Mtn.
It is rumored that negotiations are pending for the united and systematic handling of the water situation in the mines located on Battle Mtn.
The scheme consists of pumping at one of the deep shafts of that locality, either the Gold Coin or the Stratton's Independence No. 1. The latter being the deeper of the two is looked upon with the most favor.
The cost would be distributed between the mines that would be benefited by this scheme, consisting of the Portland, Ajax, Strong, Independence, and Granite.

Ajax Workings
Cripple Creek, March 18. (Special Correspondence)—The Ajax mine on Battle Mtn., has produced about 1,000 tons of ore during the month of February, the average value for that period being in the neighborhood of $35.
The ore is obtained on the seventh, eighth, and ninth levels, and is mined by both lessees and the company, the lessees producing in the neighborhood of 300 tons per month. Fifteen machine-drills are being
operated, some of them on development work.
At the meeting of the stockholders held at Denver last month, the proposition of the company building its own mill was brought up. It was favorably considered and the construction of the plant should take place in the near future.

Ajax High Grade Run at Carlton Mill
Golden Cycle Ore Runs $371 per Ton At Cripple Creek
—————————
Cripple Creek, Colo.—The Carlton Mill recently processed one of the best shipments of ore received at the gold reduction plant in a long time.
The shipment of slightly more than 41 tons (dry weight) was worth $371.88 a ton and came from the 31st level of the Ajax Mine of Golden Cycle. The gross value was worth more than $15,000.
The ore was the last to come out of the rich stope on the 31st level. A hot chimney in this stope produced some ore that was worth dollars to the pound.
