Ans.: Our Colorado correspondent writes: "In the absence of the name of the president and secretary of this company (which could have been furnished from the face of the certificate), or the names of the claims, or location of the property, it has not been possible to obtain the information desired.
I never before heard of the company, and after diligent inquiry, the only item I have obtained is from a gentleman closely connected with Cripple Creek for the last seven years, who says he thinks a company of the above name has some ground on Bull Hill, but its headquarters are in New York or some other eastern city, and therefore little is known of it in Colorado.

"The following clipping from the Colorado Springs 'Gazette,' of the 28th ult., refers to certain developments on the Dexter claim, which is a well located claim. Whether this claim is the property of the Dexter Gold Mining & Milling Company, we cannot learn:
"Work on the Dexter has been greatly lessened the past week on account of the absence of Manager Edwards. At the same time considerable ore is broken by the small force as the vein is so easily mined. One man has been known to break 20 tons with one shot. There is no doubt but that the Dexter will make a great mine with developments. The ore is not very high grade, but on account of the size of the vein and its cheapness of mining it must certainly become a bonanza.

"Von Hemert & Co., of the Midland sampler, secured a lease on the block adjoining a couple of weeks ago, and have fitted up a 15-horsepower electric hoist and built a house over it. Actual mining has begun, with two shifts of men drifting southwest, with the object of cutting the Blue Bird and also the Dexter veins at a depth of 120 feet. It is expected to require about 30 days of mining to accomplish the desired result."

"This company appears to be unknown among the leading mining brokers of Colorado Springs."

The Dexter Mining and Milling company made a shipment of 28 tons of ore, which it is expected will bring something like $45 per ton.
Von Hemert & Jolly are the lessees operating the mine.

THE ROSE NICOL GOLD MINING CO.

In the early part of the year 1901 The Reed Investment Company, of which Mr. Verner Z. Reed is president and O. H. Shoup secretary, adopted a policy of working the properties which they controlled by the leasing system.

They were among the first to inaugurate a longer time lease with a lower royalty, so that on all the properties which they control, there has been active development work carried on during the past year by lessees.

The Rose Nicol Gold Mining company own the Rose, part of the Big Banta, part of the Dexter and Last Effort, lying just north of the property of the Portland Gold Mining company.

The main shaft is down 450 feet and during the past year there have been from two to three sets of lessees working upon the property.

So far no ore has been shipped from the Rose Nicol properties, but the location of the company's ground is good.

Dexter.—This property is being worked by the Colorado Leasing, Mining and Milling Company, which is sinking the shaft from the 560-foot level to the 620-foot point, at which point laterals and crosscuts will be run. At the 650-foot level a crosscut is being run to open up the ore body which furnished so much ore 200 feet above.
It is expected that this ore shoot will be encountered in the next thirty feet. Ore is being mined at several points. Several surface improvements have recently been completed, including a large plant of machinery. It is said the company now proposes the erection of a fifty-ton cyanide plant.

Dexter.—The shaft on this Bull Hill property is being sunk to the 1,000 foot point in the hope of recovering the vein opened on the 900-foot level of the Blue Bird.
Occasional shipments are being made of ore taken from between the 300 and 500-foot levels.

Colorado Leasing Company.—This company applied last week to the District Court for a writ restoring to them possession of the Dexter property, which is alleged to have been taken possession of forcibly by the Dexter company on August 2d.
A hearing will be had by the court this week. The Colorado Leasing Company recently bought a mill at Florence and remodeled it for the purpose of treating ore from the Dexter by the cyanide process.

Dexter—The Omaha Leasing Company is preparing for the installation of a larger hoisting plant on this shaft.

Dexter.—The shaft house at this mine was destroyed by fire last week, but will be rebuilt immediately.
A new shoot of ore was struck last week at a depth of 600 feet. Two carloads have been shipped and are expected to yield about $30 per ton.

Dexter.—Manager Little has given a lease on the company's main workings to Henry Dahl. Mr. Dahl succeeds the Stewart Leasing Company, which forfeited its lease after operating the property several months.

Dexter.—A hoist is to be installed on this Bull hill property by Lessees Dahl and Riley. The shaft will be sunk to a depth of 400 feet.

Dexter.—It is reported that the company will soon commence work on its own account, and sink its shaft to a depth of over 1,000 feet. Stations will be cut every 100 feet, but the management announces that no levels will be run until a depth of 1,600 feet has been reached.

Dexter.—This company which operates on Bull Hill has purchased a ten drill compressor, 80-hp. boiler and accessory equipment. As soon as the machinery is installed, the company will commence to sink a shaft from the present 600-foot depth to 1,600 feet. No lateral work will be done other than cutting stations every 100 feet.

Cripple Creek—A carload of ore, which it is believed will net $45 a ton, has been shipped by the Western Leasing Co. from the Dexter on Bull hill. The ore was broken from a vein 18 ins. wide, recently encountered in the 500 level.

Cripple Creek—M. J. Burgdorf and associates, leasing on the Dexter property on Raven hill, made a small shipment of ore last week, and returns of $100 to the ton are expected.
Ore is being broken from a fair sized vein at a depth of but 26 feet, and assay returns are showing picture values. The work of sinking on the vein is now in progress.

Another property that has recently been taken over by the Western Investment Co. is the Dexter, adjacent to the Last Dollar. The lease was taken since the first of April, but the company is already hoisting some ore.

L. W. Terril, who recently secured a lease on the Dexter property, on the west slope of Bull hill, will start active operations immediately.
He will sink the shaft from the 600-ft. level to a depth of 1000 ft.

Cripple Creek—A large amount of money is to be expended in developing the Dexter mine on Bull hill.

Leasers on the 700-ft. level of the Dexter are mining a fair grade of milling ore and are making regular weekly shipments.

An important discovery has been made on the Dexter, Bull hill, by lessees on the 800-ft. level. In carrying the crosscut to the main Dexter vertical vein a flat vein was unexpectedly encountered containing an ore body about 5 ft. thick, assaying from $12 to $13 a ton.

Chas. Anderson and associates, operating the Dexter property on a sublease, have opened a flat vein on the 800-ft. level that assays from $12 to $30 per ton.

Work of sinking the Dexter shaft on Battle mountain has begun.

The first shipments to be made from the Dexter mine on Bull hill since the shaft was put down to the 1,100 ft. mark some months ago have just been made.

The new ore-shoot opened by lessees in the Dexter mine on Bull hill has been opened 50 ft. It averages 3 ft. in width and about $40 per ton, the yield being two cars per week.

The Dexter shaft on Bull hill is down 1217 ft., and a station is being cut at 1200 ft. Lessees are shipping ore regularly to the Golden Cycle mill.

Contractors are sinking a shaft on the Dexter for the leasing firm of Anderson & Benkelman.

A 100-ft. lift in the Dexter shaft, under lease to Anderson and Benkelman, has been sunk in 18 days by C. G. Gorman and associate contractors. The Gorman interests will now cross-cut to the vein and oreshoot on the Trail mine of the United Gold Mining Co., on which Anderson and Benkelman hold a lease that expires this fall.
It is confidently expected the cost of sinking the shaft and driving the cross-cut, timbering, and cutting the station will be taken out in addition to profits before the lease expires.

Gorman and associates, operating a sub-lease from Anderson and Benkelman on the Trail, are expected to make a good profit on the money expended in sinking the shaft an additional 100 ft. and cross-cutting to the vein.
The work was performed in record time.

The lease of Anderson and Benkelman on the Trail mine of the United Gold Mines Co. expires on January 1. Work is being rushed and in three days of the past week, shipments of ore netted the lessees $8000 after payment of transportation and treatment.
The ore shipped was from the bottom or 1400-ft. level of the Dexter shaft, and averaged better than 3 oz. gold per ton. If no renewal is granted, the company will start work on high-grade ore.

With their lease expiring on December 31, Anderson and Benkelman, lessees operating the Trail mine, through the Dexter shaft, on the southern slope of Bull hill, are producing at a rate never before witnessed from a Cripple Creek lease.
In 11 days in December, 18 cars of ore were shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs, and settlement netted the lessees $24,965.
The United Gold Mines Co. was paid in royalties $8788 and 1% was further deducted in taxes, making the total value of the 18 cars $34,500.
The lease, it is understood, will not be extended and the property, controlled by A. E. Carlton, will be operated on company account. All of the interested parties in the lease have taken out fortunes and at a rough estimate the lease has cleared $1,000,000.
The property adjoins the Cresson mine and the company for some months has been operating from the 1000-ft. level of the Cresson, and is reported to have opened good ore.

A new and rich ore-shoot has been opened on the 14th level of the Dexter mine on the south slope of Bull hill, on the Trail property of the United Gold Mines Co. by the leasing firm of Anderson & Benkelman.
The vein, 4 to 5 ft. wide, is reported to carry rich ore. The extent of the shoot is not yet determined.
