Rocky Mountain Smelter to Be Sold
DENVER, COLORADO—The Rocky Mountain smelter at Florence, built seven years ago by some enthusiastic Iowa capitalists to treat Cripple Creek ores by the pyritic process, is to be sold, September 24, to satisfy a judgment in favor of the Iowa Fiduciary Co. for $78,130. The plant originally cost $250,000. It ran for a short time only.

About two years ago the Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., with which was associated the Troy Consolidated Mines Co., took over the property, and prepared to put it in operation. Evidently the managers thought better of it later, as nothing was done, and it still stands idle.

Rocky Mountain Smelter Might Be Sold to Arizona Company
Denver—Negotiations have progressed almost to the consummation point for the sale of the Rocky Mountain smelter at Florence by the Colorado Mining and Leasing Co. to the Troy Con. Mining Co. of New York. The price named is $400,000.

The smelter has a capacity of 500 tons daily and when running full blast gives employment to 250 men. It has been idle for five years. It was erected by the Rocky Mountain Smelting Co. and was acquired by the Colorado Mining & Leasing Co. through a defaulted judgment of $400,000. The stockholders of the Colorado Mining & Leasing Co. will meet in Florence Dec. 20 to ratify the sale.

The Troy Co., if it gets the plant, will reopen it early next year, and besides treating the ore from its mines at Kelvin, Ariz., will handle Colorado custom mineral.

Colorado Smelting & Refining Co. Inquiry
Colorado Smelting & Refining Co.

14185. (Portland, Me.) Could you tell me what the prospects are of the Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Smelting Co., situated at Florence, Colo.; J. B. Harot, of Creston, Ia., president.

Ans. The prospects of the above company depend on the following:

The suitability of the present plant and the further expense required, if any, to put it in an up-to-date condition. The plant was started as a pyritic smelter (as which it was a failure) and was subsequently changed into a lead smelter. As a lead smelter, it will have to compete with the Smelter Trust, which already has eight large lead smelting plants in Colorado, two of which have been shut down for some time past for lack of supply of suitable ore.

The supply of necessary ores for mix and flux, having regard to the competition for the same class of ores by the Smelter Trust, which to a considerable extent controls the supply of Colorado lead-bearing ores, besides shipping in immense quantities from other states to supply the insufficiency of the lead-carrying ore output of Colorado to keep six of its eight plants in operation.

The amount of working capital.

The character of the future financial and technical management, especially having regard to the competition of the Smelter Trust. The management of the Rocky Mountain Smelting Co., the predecessor of the present company, was locally regarded as indifferent.
