Flotation at Cripple Creek
Flotation at Cripple Creek
The annual report of the Vindicator Consolidated Gold Mining Co. contains the following data regarding its milling operations during 1918:
On company account there was hoisted 230,304 tons of crude ore, averaging $6.15 per ton. Of this quantity, 6.67% was sorted out and sent to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs. All rejects from ore-dressing operations and the Golden Cycle shaft ore-house are delivered to the flotation plant, where they are screened and all coarse waste rejected, and the residue sent to the flotation-plant crusher.
During the year there were sent to the flotation plant from all sources 222,626 tons of ore, of in average assay-value of $2.13 per ton. Of this, 176,623 tons, assaying $1.42 per ton, was rejected by screening, and 46,003 tons valued at $4.18 sent to the flotation plant crusher.
There was shipped from the flotation plant 6209 tons of concentrate having a gross value of $206,255, equal to $34.21 per ton, and a net value after marketing charges of $171,038.
After the deduction of all operating costs the net profit from this source amounted to $27,955. The royalty paid on flotation rights was $2578, equal to 5,5 cents per ton on 46,003 tons so treated.

Golden Cycle Mill Said to Already Take Some Ore From Late October
Cripple Creek.—There is a report in Cripple Creek that the Golden Cycle mill will have two roasters in operation by October 15 and that some ore will be accepted at that time. It is also given out that certain very important improvements to be installed in the reconstruction of the plant will permit of more economical handling of ores.
It is understood though not officially that with the resumption of milling another cut will be made in treatment charges on low grades and that all ores below $10 in value will be handled for $4 per ton, including freight charges. This is a reduction of 50 cents on former rates.
Again 1,000 tons will be added to the daily capacity making 8,000 tons every 24 hours.

Golden Cycle Mill Happenings
Colorado Springs, April 3. (Special Correspondence)—During the month of March the Golden Cycle mill, which was rebuilt after the fire, treated 22,167 tons of ore from the Cripple Creek district and sampled 28,096 tons. The normal capacity of the mill will be 25,000 tons.
Eight Edwards furnaces, furnished by Chisholm, Matthew & Co. of Colorado Springs, are used for roasting the ore, and five grinders and seven Chilean mills. The company has recently installed a small Jeffrey locomotive for handling coal, which reduces the force from six men to two men.
A large percentage of the ore treated in this plant is custom ore. The plant was destroyed by fire shortly after they had started operation last fall, and it was necessary to remove several hundred tons of debris before work could be started on the new buildings. The mill was designed by P. Cazin of Denver and the construction work was under the supervision of C. W. MacArthur.
John Tait Milliken is superintendent of the mill.

Eagle Sampler Record Exemplify Surge in District Activities
A record has been made by the Eagle sampler, which shows that great activity is prevalent in the Cripple Creek district. During January 21,100 tons of ore were sampled, and now the tonnage is largely increased. In one day of two 9½ hr. shifts the plant sampled 1052.5 tons, which constitutes a record.
The ore is going to the mills at Colorado City and Florence. The Golden Cycle mine alone is shipping 200 tons per day. The reason for this activity is the reduction in rates charged by the United States R. & R. Co., which charges only $3.50 per ton for ores of $8 or less.

It is stated that the Golden Cycle Mining Co., owning the chief treatment plant handling ores of the Cripple Creek district, has refused to reduce the rates and meet the prices now in effect by the United States Refining and Reduction Co.
Metallurgists claim the Standard plant can make a fair profit on ores treated at the present rate, but because of the difference in process of extraction the Golden Cycle is unable to profitably handle the ores at those rates.

It is stated that the expected $7,000,000 sale of the Golden Cycle property, including mines, mill and coal mines, is definitely off. The Goldfields Consolidated of London and South Africa, who were negotiating for the property, was willing to take the mines at the stipulated value, being encouraged to that end by the recent rich strikes in the lower levels of the Golden Cycle.
But the experts balked at the mill and coal mines on the Milliken valuation.

Since the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs began operation leasers have been profitably handling the dump tonnage at a number of properties, notably at the Abe Lincoln, the El Paso on Beacon hill, the Morning Glory on Raven hill, and at properties adjoining the Granite and Elkton.
This, together with an influx of miners, has greatly improved conditions in the gold camp.

Moore vs. Butters Impacted Golden Cycle Late 1913
A year ago we commented on the filter litigation and the successful defense of the Moore patents. At the same time we suggested that the end of the litigation was not yet in sight. The prediction was verified late in 1913, when Mr. Charles Butters filed a suit against the Golden Cycle Mining Company, Colorado, for damages for infringement of filter patents.
This outcome was the more striking by reason of the fact that the Golden Cycle was one of the first to settle with the Moore company after the courts had sustained Moore's case against Butters.

Golden Cycle Mill Visit by the American Electrochemical Society
On Saturday morning September 13 a large number of the party of people attending the 24th general meeting of the American Electrochemical Society took the opportunity given at Colorado Springs to visit the cyanide mill of the Golden Cycle Mining Company, under the direction of Superintendent A. L. Blomfield.
This mill is the largest of Colorado's cyanide plants, having a capacity of 1000 tons of ore per day. It treats only Cripple Creek ore, and is operated not only on company account, but also as a custom mill.
The process consists in roasting to oxidize the sulpho-tellurides. after which the coarse gold is recovered by concentration on blankets. The residue is classified into sand and slime, the sand being leached with cyanide solution and the slime thickened, agitated and filtered by vacuum. The resulting gold-bearing solution is precipitated with zinc, and the gold precipitate fluxed and melted.
After the visit the party went by a special train to the Cripple Creek district.

Parkison Furnace in Use by the Golden Cycle Co.
The Golden Cycle Mining Company, of Colorado Springs and Victor, Col., has thirty-six Parkison furnaces in its mill at Colorado City and its mine at Victor. The management of the company admits a saving of $1,300 a month under four boilers at Victor, and says that where the coal bill amounted to $3,800 per month before the installation of the furnace it is now only $2,500.
At the mill in Colorado City the company has the Parkison furnace under ten Edwards ore roasters. Here the coal bill has been cut practically in two. The saving effected at the Golden Cycle mill is in the neighborhood of $200,000 a year.

Golden Cycle Cyanide Mill Info
The Golden Cycle Colorado City mill, who were in operation throughout 1910 - although not always at full capacity - uses cyanidation exclusively, and has probably the best roasting plant in the State, comprising a battery of Edwards' roasters, each having a capacity of 125 tons of Cripple Creek ore daily.
The roasted ore is ground to 25 mesh in cyanide solution, passed over blankets and then classified in Dorr classifiers. The sand is leached, and the slime agitated and filtered in a vacuum system which was newly installed last year. Precipitation is on zinc shavings.

Golden Cycle Mill Info
On sulpho-telluride ores such as Cripple Creek produces the furnaces installed at the Golden Cycle mill, Colorado Springs, Col., have a capacity of 100 tons per 24 hours, giving a sweet roast prior to cyanidation.
The sulphur content of the ore is 2.5 per cent, and of the roasted product 0.08 per cent. The fuel consumption at this plant is 11 per cent, and the cost of roasting between 55 and 60 cents per ton.

Not Easy to Sell Golden Cycle Properties
Negotiations for the sale of the Golden Cycle properties, comprising mines at Cripple Creek, Col., and cyanide mills at Colorado Springs, will hardly be brought to a successful conclusion, in the opinion of the president of the company. An option, expiring June 1, was given to an English syndicate to purchase the Golden Cycle properties, but it has not been exercised.
The Golden Cycle mill is probably the most successful cyanide mill in Colorado. It treats Cripple Creek telluride ores from its own mines as well as from others in the same district.

Golden Cycle Mill 1907 Tidbits
The Golden Cycle Mill.—This mill, at Colorado City, Colo., replacing the old Telluride plant, and which was built on the design of Philip Argall in 1906, was partially destroyed by fire in 1907, but resumed operations after reconstruction late in January, 1908. The plant when complete will have cost $1,250,000, and has a capacity of 750 tons per day.
The ore is rough crushed, and without drying passes to ball mills provided with 0.5x 0.25-in. aperture, slotted inner screens, and 0.14-in. aperture outer screens, crushing as coarse as is consistent with good roasting. The ore then passes to eight Edwards furnaces, whence it goes to Chilean roller mills in which it is crushed in cyanide solution and then it used to be amalgamated, but according to recent information amalgamation has been discontinued.
The product from the Chilean mills is passed over blankets and then is classified into sands and slimes, the sands are treated by percolation and the slimes by agitation and the Argall vacuum filter.
More info can be found on page 219 in the January 25, 1908 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal (Volume LXXXV).
Complete data on the mill are still lacking. Its advent marks the introduction of the Kalgoorlie roasting method into the United States.

Golden Cycle & U.S. R. & R. Companies Treatment Rate Wars in 1908
The Golden Cycle mine has been one of the steadiest and largest producers in the camp for many years, and the great help given to the Cripple Creek district by J. T. Milliken in building an 800-ton mill at Colorado City and treating (in addition to the Golden Cycle ore) custom ore, cannot be over-estimated.
Their rate of $4.50 for freight and treatment on $8 ore was the means of making the camp look like 'old times' again, for almost every property with anything in sight, commenced operations either under lease or company account, and everyone was looking for leases in the mines or on the dumps.
The United States Reduction & Refining Co., to meet this competition, put down their rates even lower than the Golden Cycle, making a $3.50 rate on $8 ore (though they have since raised this twice during the last three months), thus more than ever stimulating development work all over the district.
Unfortunately many lessees shipped thousands of tons of dump ore that ran close to $4, leaving the Reduction company but little margin for loss, hence their reasons for putting up their rates to discourage the shipment of ore running under $10 per ton.
However, the good work done by the Cycle people is highly commendable, and has been the means of bringing the camp back to a good monthly tonnage.

Golden Cycle Gold Mining and Milling Co. Sold Property Report
GOLDEN CYCLE MINE SOLD.
Englishmen Reported to Have Bought Cripple Creek Property for $7,000,000.
Special to New York Times.
Colorado Springs, Col., Jan. 15.—The Golden Cycle Gold Mining and Milling Company's property at Cripple Creek has been sold, according to reports to a syndicate of English capitalists.
The consideration is placed at $4.50 a share, or $7,000,000.
The company's main office is in St. Louis, where President John T. Milliken and other officers live.
General Manager McGarry of Colorado Springs admits that the mine has been examined a second time for Englishmen, Verner Z. Reed, now of France, who sold Stratton's Independence mine to Londoners for $10,000,000, probably made the Golden Cycle sale.
The properties include the Golden Cycle and the Theresa Mines, a cyanide and a chlorination mill, and 400 acres of coal lands near Colorado Springs.
The chlorination mill is treating two-fifths of Cripple Creek's $1,250,000 monthly output.
Besides the two mines named, the company's holdings include control of other mining companies, comprising in all 400 acres of mines.

Golden Cycle Mining Co. Will Build Mill at Colorado City
Denver, Aug. 18—The Golden Cycle Mining Co. for some time past has owned over 60 acres of land at Colorado City, adjoining the Telluride plant, and it is probable that their plant will be built there. It will be a modern cyanide plant, of a capacity of from 200 to 300 tons daily, and the cost will be about $350,000.
For a while it was thought that a sale of the Telluride mill to this company was a probability, but the plan was given up, as the necessary alterations would be too expensive.

Wild Horse High Grade Ships Direct to Golden Cycle Mill
Cripple Creek, June 19. (Special Correspondence)—Thos. Kavanaugh & Co. has a lease on the Wild Horse mine, on Bull hill, and is handling 800 tons through the cyanide plant. They are taking high-grade material from the lower levels, which is being shipped direct to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs.
The mill at the mine is not equipped for handling this high-grade material, and it would not pay to remodel the mill for the amount they are taking out. The mill is dry-crushing, and the ore requires wet-crushing machinery.
The mill has been operated at a profit on the ore which they are able to handle. A number of sub-lessees are taking out ore on the Wild Horse.

Golden Cycle Mill Learns From Australia
Denver, Colorado.
Metallurgy at Cripple Creek.
It has often been a source of wonder that the metallurgists engaged in treating Cripple Creek ores have shown themselves so little disposed to make use of the experiments of their colleagues upon the telluride ores of Western Australia. The proverb says: "Better late than never," so the late developments in the metallurgy of these ores in Colorado are to be commended.
The new 1,000-ton mill of the Golden Cycle Co. embodies some of the features developed by Sutherland and Marriner in Western Australia, and another smaller mill lately put in operation conducts its treatment along similar lines. The waste of experience is the most foolish waste of all.
The purpose of metallurgy is to make money out of ore, and neither conservatism, self-pride, nor unwillingness to expend small amounts for the purpose of learning how to save large ones should prevent the manager from trying to make the maximum amount of money from his ore.

Golden Cycle Mill Outcome Awaited with Interest
Denver, Colorado.
Competition Between Cyanidation and Chlorination.
With the 16% reduction in the output for 1906 for the Cripple Creek District, compared with that of 1905, has come a corresponding pressure for the reduction of treatment charges. Cyanidation has locked horns with chlorination in what promises to be a death struggle and all who are interested are anxiously awaiting the outcome.
The Golden Cycle mill is now in operation and is offering to treat ores for $3 per ton less than the rate heretofore asked. This reduction has been met by the smelting companies, which means a correspondingly great saving to the mines which do not possess reduction works. The process at the Golden Cycle is, after roasting, to catch the coarse gold by amalgamation and then to cyanide. The outcome is awaited with interest, for much skepticism is rife as to whether the loss of mercury can be kept so low as not to effect the cyanidation unfavorably.
Altogether, it seems as though cyanidation were destined soon to triumph. Bromo-cyanidation will now have a fair chance, and it would not be strange if it were to make a better showing than it has in previous trials.

Golden Cycle Mill Background Stuff
Ten years ago it was in the Cripple Creek district local practice to subject the sulpho-telluride ores to roasting before leaching, not so much to drive off the tellurium, for gold telluride is sparingly soluble in cyanide, but to expedite the cyanidation by rendering the ores permeable to the solution. In preparing the ore for treatment, it was found advisable to crush finely, because coarsely crushed ore when roasted yielded particles of gold too large for rapid solution; on the other hand, the coarse gold was most amenable to amalgamation.
Thus the Golden Cycle mill, erected in 1907, was designed to employ coarse crushing (to 3/16 inch) followed by roasting, the roasted product yielding its coarse gold to amalgamation and its fine gold to cyanidation. At first amalgamating plates were used, but these subsequently were replaced by blankets, the blanketing being ground in amalgamating-pans.
It was also ascertained that the dehydration of the quartz during roasting rendered the ore brittle and therefore easily pulverized. This scheme of treatment was well adapted to ores of medium grade, as viewed locally, namely, about 8 dwt. per ton, but was unsuitable for anything poorer, on account of the high cost of roasting.
Thus the old filling in the mines and the old dumps on the surface could not be beneficiated. The roasting alone entailed a cost of $1.75 per ton. Thereupon further experiments were made with a view to separating the sulpho-tellurides, representing only 3% of the ore, and submitting that small part of the output to roasting.
The concentrate thus eliminated became readily marketable at the smelters, so that it underwent no further treatment at the mine. The remainder of the ore is crushed fine and concentrated on tables, but dilute cyanide solution is used in lieu of water.
Thus from the moment the ore undergoes crushing the gold in it is exposed to solvent action.

Golden Cycle Cyanide Workings
For several years past Colorado metallurgists have been attempting to solve the metallurgical puzzle presented by the low-grade ores of Cripple Creek. Millions of tons of ore running from $3 to $10 per ton have lain on the great dumps for years, while other millions were exposed in hundreds of miles of underground workings. Thus, for some years previous to 1907, the issues were clearly presented, first, to eliminate roasting the ores if possible, and, second, to eliminate freight charges by building mills at the mines.
It will, of course, be understood that until a way of eliminating the roasting of the tellurium ores was discovered, it would be useless to erect mills at the Cripple Creek mines where roasting costs even more than at Colorado Springs.
In the meantime, the great Golden Cycle plant at Colorado City has been completed and successfully operated by roasting the ores and then cyaniding. During the year 1908 this plant is said to have produced roughly $6,000,000 in gold.
Owing to the fact, it is commonly believed, that the cyaniding of low-grade ores at this plant gave a chance for little or no profit, the company has lately decided to erect a plant at its Cripple Creek mine.
Ground has been broken for the erection of this plant and construction work is progressing rapidly.
Contrary to the conclusions of the Stratton Independence and Portland companies' metallurgists, those of the Golden Cycle are to the effect that concentration of the low-grade ores before shipment to the Colorado Springs mills will solve the problem.
According to Manager McGarry, the exhaustive tests carried on at the company's experimental plant at Colorado City have resulted in a saving of 65 per cent. of the gross value of these low-grade ores.
It is, therefore, planned to treat those ores which will not stand transportation charges by a system of dry concentration at a ratio of 6 tons crude ore into 1 of concentrates.
These concentrates will then be shipped to Colorado City for treatment at the company's cyanide plant. The mill in the course of construction on Bull Hill, near the Golden Cycle's main shaft, is to have the initial capacity of 80 tons of concentrates per 24 hours.

Trail & Dexter Lessees with Record Producing Rate
With their lease expiring on December 31, Anderson and Benkelman, lessees operating the Trail mine, through the Dexter shaft, on the southern slope of Bull hill, are producing at a rate never before witnessed from a Cripple Creek lease.
In 11 days in December, 18 cars of ore were shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs, and settlement netted the lessees $24,965.
The United Gold Mines Co. was paid in royalties $8788 and 1% was further deducted in taxes, making the total value of the 18 cars $34,500.
The lease, it is understood, will not be extended and the property, controlled by A. E. Carlton, will be operated on company account. All of the interested parties in the lease have taken out fortunes and at a rough estimate the lease has cleared $1,000,000.
The property adjoins the Cresson mine and the company for some months has been operating from the 1000-ft. level of the Cresson, and is reported to have opened good ore.

Leadville Ores to Go to Golden Cycle Mill
Leadville - A contract for the treatment of gold ore from the Little Johnny mine calling for 6000 tons monthly has been entered into by the Golden Cycle Mining & Reduction Co., of Colorado Springs. The first consignment of seven carloads was delivered at the mill last week.
The Little Johnny ore which was formerly treated at the Pueblo smelter of the American Smelting & Refining Co., is worth $30 to $35 per ton. The handling of Leadville ores at the Golden Cycle mill, not only means economical treatment for Leadville gold-ores, but will result in the restoration of traffic over the Colorado Midland railroad.
Negotiations are reported under way to make the Colorado Midland a transcontinental line, in connection with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy or Rock Island roads and westward from Leadville over the D. & R. G. and Western Pacific.

Lead Salts in Cyanidation; Golden Cycle Mill
The Golden Cycle mill, at Colorado City, is treating about 1000 tons daily of mixed Cripple Creek ores, and about 50 to 100 lb. of acetate is used per day with about 3000 tons of solution.
Its use is entirely for precipitating purposes. Acetate solution is fed into the gold-solution storage tanks and it is found absolutely essential for getting steady good results with the zinc, both shavings and zinc-dust (Merrill process).
Its use in solution with the pulp to be cyanided has proved to be distinctly deleterous.

Golden Cycle Sale Rumors
Denver Nov. 15—In the Cripple Creek district, vague rumors are being circulated as to a proposed sale of the Golden Cycle mine and mill for $12,000,000, the story being accompanied, as usual, by hints of a tremendously rich strike in the 1300 level.
