Golden Cycle Mining Co. Will Build Mill at Colorado City
Denver, Aug. 18—The Golden Cycle Mining Co. for some time past has owned over 60 acres of land at Colorado City, adjoining the Telluride plant, and it is probable that their plant will be built there. It will be a modern cyanide plant, of a capacity of from 200 to 300 tons daily, and the cost will be about $350,000.
graphic for visual presentation of text For a while it was thought that a sale of the Telluride mill to this company was a probability, but the plan was given up, as the necessary alterations would be too expensive.

Telluride Mill to Go Cyanide as Golden Cycle Mill
Annual Review.

graphic for visual presentation of textPopularity of Cyanidation.
graphic for visual presentation of text The erection of cyanide mills for the treatment of the low-grade oxidized ores of the district has been an important feature. The Golden Cycle Mining Co. acquired the old Telluride mill from the General Metals Co. at Colorado City, which has been re-modeled to accommodate the cyanide process under the direction of Philip Argall of Denver.
graphic for visual presentation of text This mill, which will have a capacity of 250 tons per day, will soon be ready for work. Ore is already being sampled and stored for future treatment.

Golden Cycle Mill Outcome Awaited with Interest
Denver, Colorado.
graphic for visual presentation of textCompetition Between Cyanidation and Chlorination.
graphic for visual presentation of text With the 16% reduction in the output for 1906 for the Cripple Creek District, compared with that of 1905, has come a corresponding pressure for the reduction of treatment charges. Cyanidation has locked horns with chlorination in what promises to be a death struggle and all who are interested are anxiously awaiting the outcome.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Golden Cycle mill is now in operation and is offering to treat ores for $3 per ton less than the rate heretofore asked. This reduction has been met by the smelting companies, which means a correspondingly great saving to the mines which do not possess reduction works. The process at the Golden Cycle is, after roasting, to catch the coarse gold by amalgamation and then to cyanide. The outcome is awaited with interest, for much skepticism is rife as to whether the loss of mercury can be kept so low as not to effect the cyanidation unfavorably.
graphic for visual presentation of text Altogether, it seems as though cyanidation were destined soon to triumph. Bromo-cyanidation will now have a fair chance, and it would not be strange if it were to make a better showing than it has in previous trials.

Golden Cycle Mill Learns From Australia
Denver, Colorado.
graphic for visual presentation of textMetallurgy at Cripple Creek.
graphic for visual presentation of text It has often been a source of wonder that the metallurgists engaged in treating Cripple Creek ores have shown themselves so little disposed to make use of the experiments of their colleagues upon the telluride ores of Western Australia. The proverb says: "Better late than never," so the late developments in the metallurgy of these ores in Colorado are to be commended.
graphic for visual presentation of text The new 1,000-ton mill of the Golden Cycle Co. embodies some of the features developed by Sutherland and Marriner in Western Australia, and another smaller mill lately put in operation conducts its treatment along similar lines. The waste of experience is the most foolish waste of all.
graphic for visual presentation of text The purpose of metallurgy is to make money out of ore, and neither conservatism, self-pride, nor unwillingness to expend small amounts for the purpose of learning how to save large ones should prevent the manager from trying to make the maximum amount of money from his ore.

Wild Horse High Grade Ships Direct to Golden Cycle Mill
Cripple Creek, June 19. (Special Correspondence)—Thos. Kavanaugh & Co. has a lease on the Wild Horse mine, on Bull hill, and is handling 800 tons through the cyanide plant. They are taking high-grade material from the lower levels, which is being shipped direct to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mill at the mine is not equipped for handling this high-grade material, and it would not pay to remodel the mill for the amount they are taking out. The mill is dry-crushing, and the ore requires wet-crushing machinery.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mill has been operated at a profit on the ore which they are able to handle. A number of sub-lessees are taking out ore on the Wild Horse.

Golden Cycle Cyanide Workings
For several years past Colorado metallurgists have been attempting to solve the metallurgical puzzle presented by the low-grade ores of Cripple Creek. Millions of tons of ore running from $3 to $10 per ton have lain on the great dumps for years, while other millions were exposed in hundreds of miles of underground workings. Thus, for some years previous to 1907, the issues were clearly presented, first, to eliminate roasting the ores if possible, and, second, to eliminate freight charges by building mills at the mines.
graphic for visual presentation of text It will, of course, be understood that until a way of eliminating the roasting of the tellurium ores was discovered, it would be useless to erect mills at the Cripple Creek mines where roasting costs even more than at Colorado Springs.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text In the meantime, the great Golden Cycle plant at Colorado City has been completed and successfully operated by roasting the ores and then cyaniding. During the year 1908 this plant is said to have produced roughly $6,000,000 in gold.
graphic for visual presentation of text Owing to the fact, it is commonly believed, that the cyaniding of low-grade ores at this plant gave a chance for little or no profit, the company has lately decided to erect a plant at its Cripple Creek mine.
graphic for visual presentation of text Ground has been broken for the erection of this plant and construction work is progressing rapidly.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text Contrary to the conclusions of the Stratton Independence and Portland companies' metallurgists, those of the Golden Cycle are to the effect that concentration of the low-grade ores before shipment to the Colorado Springs mills will solve the problem.
graphic for visual presentation of text According to Manager McGarry, the exhaustive tests carried on at the company's experimental plant at Colorado City have resulted in a saving of 65 per cent. of the gross value of these low-grade ores.
graphic for visual presentation of text It is, therefore, planned to treat those ores which will not stand transportation charges by a system of dry concentration at a ratio of 6 tons crude ore into 1 of concentrates.
graphic for visual presentation of text These concentrates will then be shipped to Colorado City for treatment at the company's cyanide plant. The mill in the course of construction on Bull Hill, near the Golden Cycle's main shaft, is to have the initial capacity of 80 tons of concentrates per 24 hours.

Info Title:
Golden Cycle Mill Background Stuff
Ten years ago it was in the Cripple Creek district local practice to subject the sulpho-telluride ores to roasting before leaching, not so much to drive off the tellurium, for gold telluride is sparingly soluble in cyanide, but to expedite the cyanidation by rendering the ores permeable to the solution. In preparing the ore for treatment, it was found advisable to crush finely, because coarsely crushed ore when roasted yielded particles of gold too large for rapid solution; on the other hand, the coarse gold was most amenable to amalgamation.
graphic for visual presentation of text Thus the Golden Cycle mill, erected in 1907, was designed to employ coarse crushing (to 3/16 inch) followed by roasting, the roasted product yielding its coarse gold to amalgamation and its fine gold to cyanidation. At first amalgamating plates were used, but these subsequently were replaced by blankets, the blanketing being ground in amalgamating-pans.
graphic for visual presentation of text It was also ascertained that the dehydration of the quartz during roasting rendered the ore brittle and therefore easily pulverized. This scheme of treatment was well adapted to ores of medium grade, as viewed locally, namely, about 8 dwt. per ton, but was unsuitable for anything poorer, on account of the high cost of roasting.
graphic for visual presentation of text Thus the old filling in the mines and the old dumps on the surface could not be beneficiated. The roasting alone entailed a cost of $1.75 per ton. Thereupon further experiments were made with a view to separating the sulpho-tellurides, representing only 3% of the ore, and submitting that small part of the output to roasting.
graphic for visual presentation of text The concentrate thus eliminated became readily marketable at the smelters, so that it underwent no further treatment at the mine. The remainder of the ore is crushed fine and concentrated on tables, but dilute cyanide solution is used in lieu of water.
graphic for visual presentation of text Thus from the moment the ore undergoes crushing the gold in it is exposed to solvent action.

Golden Cycle Properties Sold
The United States is really in an excellent situation. The new wave of prosperity has spread at least as far west as Denver where, following the revival at Cripple Creek resulting from the finding of bonanza ore in the Cresson Cons., comes the announcement that the Golden Cycle properties have been sold for $4,500,000, with which comfortable sum in cash Mr. John T. Milliken retires from the great business he has built up.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mine goes to the Vindicator company, thereby stopping disastrous litigation, while the mill and coal properties go to a syndicate headed by A. E. Carlton, Spencer Penrose, and Sherwood Aldrich.

Golden Cycle Mill Coal Issues
A. E. Carlton, president of the Golden Cycle Mining & Reduction Co., has announced that if the coal situation requires the mill will be shut-down temporarily and the 2000 tons of coal now consumed monthly at the plant will be diverted to the mines of the district.
